Emergence
Songwriting
At the end of July 2014 drummer John Larsen announced that the band was already collecting ideas for a new studio album. By November 2014, singer Michael Schøn Poulsen said he had around ten ideas for the album, which he captured on tour with his notebook or smartphone . The band worked on these ideas during the soundchecks before the concerts. According to Michael Schøn Poulsen, composing the new album was very difficult. He wrote a lot of songs for the album, 25 to 27 of which he discarded. He made most of the compositions at home with the help of a cassette recorder . At the suggestion of a friend, Schøn Poulsen worked for some time with an eight-track recording device with which you could program the drums yourself. After about a month, he put this device in the basement, as this device lost much of his creative inspiration.
At first, as with the previous album, Poulsen tried to write stylistically different songs. After realizing that he had a lot of ideas for simple, straightforward rock songs, he focused on the latter. The songs on the new album should also have more space for melodies , so that the guitars were tuned up to E and Poulsen sings in a higher pitch. In May 2015, Schøn Poulsen assumed that the band would be ready for studio recording in November. Shortly before the start of the recordings, Volbeat announced the amicable separation from their former bassist Anders Kjølholm in November 2015 . For the North America tour in spring 2016, the band signed Kaspar Boye Larsen , who previously played in the bands Withering Surface and The Candidate , as bassist .
Of the twelve tracks that were released on the album, two are cover versions . The original song Rebound comes from the US punk rock band Teenage Bottlerocket on their debut album Another Way . The second cover version is the song Battleship Chains that was written by Terry Anderson. The song became famous in 1986 through the American southern rock band The Georgia Satellites . Originally the band wanted to cover the song When the Sky Comes Looking for You by Motörhead . However, when the musicians learned of the death of teenage bottlerocket drummer Brandon Carlisle, they decided against this plan.
"Two weeks after we recorded Rebound , we got the news that [Motörhead singer] Lemmy had died, which of course shocked us."
Recordings
The recordings for Seal the Deal & Let's Boogie took place in the Hansen Studios in Ribe , Denmark . Studio owner Jacob Hansen acted again as producer , while guitarist Rob Caggiano appeared again as co-producer. Caggiano played both guitar and bass for the album. The album was mixed by the American Joe Barresi. According to Rob Caggiano, the band members were impressed by Barresi's work for the Slipknot album .5: The Gray Chapter , so they chose Barresi as their mixer. The mastering was done by Bob Ludwig, who had previously worked with bands like Led Zeppelin and Metallica . At the end of February 2016 the album was mixed.
Once again, numerous guest musicians can be heard on Seal the Deal & Let's Boogie . In the song For evigt , the singer Johan Olsen from the band Magtens Korridorer appears again , who was a guest singer in the song The Garden's Tale in 2007 . The text for For evigt is in Danish . The Canadian Danko Jones has a guest appearance on the song Black Rose . For the song Goodbye Forever , the band engaged the Harlem Gospel Choir . Other guest musicians are Rod Sinclair, who plays the banjo on the album , and the slide guitarist Anders Pedersen. and the Danish singer-songwriter Mia Maja, who contributes background vocals to some of the songs .
publication
In addition to the regular album, a limited "Deluxe Edition" of the album was released. This includes the songs Slaytan , The Bliss and Black Rose as a bonus , as well as a live version of the song The Devil's Bleeding Crown , which was recorded on August 1st, 2015 in Odense, Denmark . In contrast to the previous album Outlaw Gentlemen & Shady Ladies , the album Seal the Deal & Let's Boogie doesn't follow a concept. Nevertheless, a loose, thematic red thread would run through the songs on the album. According to Michael Schøn Poulsen, the new album sings about a universe of demons , which are symbolically represented on the album cover.
“We all wrestle with our own demons, and that is exactly what the artwork represents. That's why the boxer is ahead. It shows: No matter what kind of life you lead, you always have struggles inside yourself. The title Seal the Deal & Let's Boogie also translates nicely onto the cover: Let's fight this fight and then we can have fun. "
The song Marie Laveau refers to the Voodoo - priestess who in the 19th century in New Orleans worked. She was considered one of the most influential people in the city during her lifetime. Numerous stories and legends exist about them to this day. The Gates of Babylon makes reference to the Mesopotamian goddess Ištar . She was considered the goddess of war and sexuality . When Mary Jane Kelly is the fifth victim of the serial killer Jack the Ripper , who in the autumn of 1888 in London district of Whitechapel at least five prostitutes murdered. The perpetrator Jack the Ripper was never caught and his identity is still unknown to this day.
