Rewind, Replay, Rebound is the seventh studio album of the Danish Metal - band Volbeat . It was released on August 2, 2019 via Vertigo Records and is the first album with bassist Kaspar Boye Larsen .
Emergence
Songwriting
In June 2018 singer Michael Schøn Poulsen announced a new Volbeat album for 2019. After the end of the stadium tour through North America in the opening act of Metallica , the band started to collect ideas for a new album. In addition to him, the guitarist Rob Caggiano wrote some songs. In the summer of 2018, Volbeat played at numerous music festivals and planned to continue working on the ideas in Denmark from July 2017 . One of the first songs to be completed was The Everlasting , which was released on the December 2018 live DVD Let's Boogie! Live from Telia Parken was released and, according to Poulsen, will "definitely" be featured on the new album.
For the new album, Michael Poulsen experimented with new stylistic elements and vocal styles. When he played demo recordings to friends , he was asked who was singing. When Poulsen mentioned that he was singing, his friends would have been stunned. The fact that the band recorded more rock than metal songs on their new album is what Poulsen described as the band's progression. Metal would still be an influence of the band, however, according to Poulsen, the musicians have to bring these influences "in time if they make sense".
“While we were writing the songs, we were playing around with some old-school metal tracks in the rehearsal room, and all of a sudden we said to ourselves: Wow, we have three really fast Thrash songs here. We were a little afraid that these songs might distract from what Volbeat is all about as a whole. "
According to Poulsen, the band has withheld the three said songs in order to eventually release them as an EP . According to Michael Poulsen, the new bass player Kaspar Boye Larsen brought in many ideas of his own, while his predecessor Anders Kjølholm, according to Poulsen, “played more of what was told to him”. For this reason the bass would be "really present for the first time" on the new album.
Recordings
The recordings for the album began at the end of November 2018. The album was again produced by Jacob Hansen , while Michael Poulsen and Rob Caggiano acted as co-producers. Numerous guest musicians are again represented on the album. Mia Maja contributed background songs to various titles. In addition, the Harlem Gospel Choir is performing again. The song Die to Live features Neil Fallon from the band Clutch as guest vocalist, Raynier Jacob Jacildo on piano and Doug Corcoran on saxophone . For the song Cheapside Sloggers , Gary Holt from the bands Exodus and Slayer contributed a guitar solo.

After the song The Everlasting had already been released on the DVD released in December 2018, the song Parasite followed on May 10, 2019 , which is the shortest in the band's history with a playing time of 40 seconds. The song caused heated hearts among the fans, which, according to Michael Poulsen, was also wanted.
“Anyway, we had fun teasing and trolling our fans a bit. Today there are countless possibilities for self-promotion. You can go the conventional way and everything is quickly forgotten, or you can do something unusual and get a reaction that lasts for a few weeks. Ultimately, however, you shouldn't take all of this too seriously. "
Five days later the album was announced and the song Leviathan was introduced. On June 13, 2019, the music video for the song Last Day Under the Sun was released. For the first time, the band used a photo as an album cover instead of a drawing, as was previously the case. It shows a black and white picture of a group of boys from the 1920s. According to Poulsen, the previous album Seal the Deal & Let's Boogie should have had a photo on the album cover. Due to lack of time, however, the musicians could not find a suitable picture, so the idea was discarded.
In addition to the regular version, the album will appear in a deluxe edition with a second CD. This contains the songs Under the Influence , Immortal but Destructible and Die to Live as well as demo versions of the songs Last Day Under the Sun , Rewind the Exit , When We Were Kids , Maybe I Believe and Leviathan . The album will also be released as a special deluxe edition box set as well as on transparent and blue vinyl, each limited to 1000 copies.
Press boycott
The day before the album was released, nine Danish media outlets published an open letter announcing that they would not write about the band and the album. The signatories include the daily newspapers Information , Berlingske , Jyllands-Posten and Politiken , the tabloid Ekstra Bladet , the music magazine Gaffa and the online magazines Devilution , Poplish and Blastbeat . Ekstra Bladet and Devilution had previously not received accreditation for Volbeat's concert at Telia Parken in August 2017 without giving a reason . Even at the Volbeat concerts in Denmark in summer 2018, both media did not receive any accreditation. Both of the excluded media outlets had previously posted negative reviews of the band.
After both Ekstra Bladet and Devilution were not sampled in advance with promotional copies of the album on the instructions of the band , the media mentioned above merged. They declared that "the band's lack of respect for a free and independent press will not be tolerated" and that the media involved will not write about the band until the band, record company, management or promoter lifts the ban.

According to Michael Poulsen, the album title and the cover image refer to the band and their musical development. Rewind stands for the earlier time, Replay stands for the inspiration of the old material from Volbeat, while Rebound stands for taking the old inspirations and improving them. The lyrics are about childhood memories, but also about the experiences singer Michael Poulsen has had since the birth of his daughter. The title of the last song on the album 7:24 refers to the time Poulsen's daughter was born.
“A child lets you see life with completely different eyes. You suddenly have the opportunity to look back at your own past. When I started writing, I was very fascinated by this retrospective aspect. You relive certain parts and memories of your own childhood as a father. "
The lyrics to Last Day Under the Sun were inspired by a book about the singer Johnny Cash . When he had major problems with alcohol and other drugs , he often slept in a cave at night to die. The next morning, Cash woke up feeling like he'd gotten another chance. When We Were Kids deals with thoughts about immortality and innocence that every person has in their youth. Rewind the Exit and Die to Live, on the other hand, are about the fact that the human pursuit of perfection is an empty goal.
The title Cheapside Sloggers refers to the television series Peaky Blinders - Gangs of Birmingham . The person named in The Awakening of Bonnie Parker is the female part of the American criminal duo Bonnie and Clyde .

Reviews
According to Sebastian Kessler from the German magazine Metal Hammer , "even the greatest cynic would find it difficult not to discover a favorite song (s) among the 14 tracks". Singer Michael Schön Poulsen would "sing as varied as never before". Rewind, Replay, Rebound would be a “charming summer album”, for which Kessler awarded 5.5 out of seven points. For Ronny Bittner from the German magazine Rock Hard , Rewind, Replay, Rebound mark "the (to date) sad climax of the development that the band is constantly overdosing on fabric softener ". The focus is "on sweet radio numbers". With the "wooden arranged material your feet regularly fall asleep, because neither the guitar work nor the vocal melodies have original accents." Because “everything looks like it has been designed on the drawing board”, Bittner awarded six out of ten points.
The criticism of Andreas Schiffmann from the German magazine Visions was much sharper . Michael Poulsen's “creative impoverishment” would continue on the band's seventh album, while “the band's cash register should ring again”. Schiffmann described songs like Die to Live , Leviathan and Last Day Under the Sun as "off the shelf" that "do not prevent how shallow the quartet now sounds". In addition to “many unspeakably arbitrary melodies”, Schiffmann criticized the song Maybe I Believe in particular , in which the group “went into the radio lowlands of Tim Bendzko or Max Giesinger ”. Schiffmann awarded four out of twelve points.

Rewind, Replay, Rebound reached number one on the album charts in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. In her home country Denmark, the album only reached number two after five number one albums in a row. Before that, only the debut album The Strength / The Sound / The Songs missed the top of the chart. In the UK the album with seventh place reached a new peak position, while the album in the United States with space 27 reached the second worst placement of the band's history.
