Rock the Rebel / Metal the Devil is the second album by the Danish metal band Volbeat . The album was released on February 23, 2007 via Mascot Records and was awarded quadruple platinum in Denmark and gold in Germany . The second single, The Garden's Tale , also went platinum.

Emergence

The complete album including the lyrics was written by Michael Poulsen . With "Boa (JDM)" the sixth song of the demo Beat the Meat was used for an album. The five other tracks have already been re-recorded for the debut album . Ten other written songs were not used for the album. Was added Rock the Rebel / Metal the Devil within eleven days in October 2006 in the Hansen Studios in the Danish town of Ribe . The album was produced and mixed by Jacob Hansen . He was supported by Martin Pagaard Wolff. Hansen contributed backing vocals on "River Queen" and "Soulweeper # 2".

The Danish vocals for The Garden's Tale were done by Johan Olsen from the Danish rock band Magtens Korridorer . Poulsen and Olsen met at the show for the "Steppeulv" awards. Rod Sinclair played the banjo on " Sad Man's Tongue " and contributed a guitar solo. Martin Pagaard Wolff played the acoustic guitar on this song . Anders Pedersen played the Hawaiian guitar on "The Human Instrument" and "Sad Man's Tongue" .

After the recordings for the album were finished, the band separated from the guitarist Franz "Hellboss" Gottschalk. The separation was officially justified by personal differences. In an interview, Poulsen added that Gottschalk behaved disrespectfully towards the crew and the other bands at concerts.

The title of the album comes from the drummer Jon Larsen. The musicians were often asked in interviews after the release of the first album whether Volbeat was a metal, rock or punk band. The musicians had no answer to this question because, according to Larsen, they did not know it themselves. According to Larsen, the title makes it clear that Volbeat are both a metal and a rock band.

The album cover was designed by the "Jester" company and shows the sheet of a circular saw that was placed on a record player . The reed rotates at 666 instead of the usual 33 revolutions per minute for long-playing records. so that the sparks spray on the pickup . According to Poulsen, the turntable stands for the rock 'n' roll in the band's sound, while the saw blade with the sparks is a winking bow to the clichés of metal.

"Mr & Mrs Ness" is a continuation of the story of the songs "Danny & Lucy (11pm)" and "Fire Song" from the first album. Mr. and Mrs. Ness are Lucy's parents. Ms. Ness was found shot dead. Since her husband's hands are smeared with blood , he is mistaken for the killer and sentenced to prison. However, he did not commit the act. In an interview, Poulsen stated that Mr Ness is not Mike Ness , the social distortion singer .

"Sad Man's Tongue" pays homage to the country singer Johnny Cash . "Soulweeper # 2" is a continuation of "Soulweeper" from the first album. Singer Michael Poulsen has been asked many times by female fans to write a similar song for the new album. The letters JDM from the song Boa (JDM) stand for Jens de Mello, a friend of Michael Poulsen from Brazil . De Mello thought that a riff of the song would sound like the band Soulfly . Poulsen names de Mello at the end of the song with the words "Eso é para mi amigo do Brasil" ( Portuguese for this is for my Brazilian friend ).
