Mary Ann's Place is the seventh single from the Danish heavy metal band Volbeat . It is the second single from their third studio album Guitar Gangsters & Cadillac Blood .

Emergence

The song was written by singer and guitarist Michael Poulsen during the tour for the second studio album Rock the Rebel / Metal the Devil . Towards the end of the tour, the band played the song a few times during concerts. Poulsen stated in an interview that in his opinion the song was missing something and thought about a female voice. While driving a car, Poulsen's girlfriend put in a CD by the band Swan Lee . He liked the voice of the singer Pernille Rosendahl immediately. He contacted her and received an acceptance.

The song was recorded in March and April 2008 at Hansen Studios in the Danish city of Ribe . The album was produced by Jacob Hansen . Kristian Pedersen, who played the acoustic guitar on the song, appears as a further guest musician . A music video was shot for the song . The director was doing Alex Diezinger .

"Mary Ann's Place" continues the story of the songs "Fire Song", "Danny & Lucy (11pm)" and "Mr & Mrs Ness" from the two previous albums. The protagonists are the 28-year-old drug addict Danny and his 16-year-old girlfriend Lucy. Both flee from Lucy's parents and then die in a car accident. The story continues on the second album with "Mr & Mrs Ness", Lucy's parents. Lucy's mother died by suicide. Her husband is found and arrested with bloodied hands and a weapon in hand. The third album continues with “Mary Ann's Place”. Mr Ness visits the graves of his wife and daughter while on leave .

The music video from "Mary Ann's Place" shows the full story. The band and Diezinger got their inspiration for the portrayal from the film Dogville from director Lars von Trier .

The single entered the Danish single charts on January 23, 2009 and reached the highest ranking at number 35. Overall, the single stayed in the Danish charts for three weeks. Outside of Denmark, the single could not place in the charts.
