Outlaw Gentlemen & Shady Ladies ( . English , wicked men of honor and notorious ladies') is the fifth studio album by the Danish Metal - band Volbeat . It was released on April 5, 2013 via Vertigo Records and reached number one in the respective album charts in six countries . In Denmark the album was triple platinum in Germany with triple gold and Austria certified platinum. The "Room 24" song was at the Grammy Awards 2014 in the category Best Metal Performance nominated. The band won the 2014 Echo in the Rock / Alternative International category .

Emergence

Songwriting

The music for the album was created during various tours through Europe and North America. Singer and guitarist Michael Schøn Poulsen collected ideas on his mobile phone . After the band returned to Denmark, Schøn Poulsen worked out the new songs from the material within six months. After the first three songs were finished, he realized that the songs convey a Western feeling.

In addition, the band was looking for a successor to the guitarist Thomas Bredahl . Michael Schøn Poulsen explained in an interview that Volbeat first tested a Danish guitarist. According to Schøn Poulsen, he turned out to be a “very good guitarist” during joint rehearsals, but the interpersonal skills didn't work. Drummer Jon Larsen added that the candidate, unknown by name, couldn't imagine going on long tour with the band. As a result, Michael Schøn Poulsen, Jon Larsen and bassist Anders Kjølholm agreed to go into the studio as a trio.

Recordings

The recordings for the album began in January 2013. In contrast to the first four studio albums, the band broke some habits. So this time a new studio was booked and in addition to the previous producer Jacob Hansen , the former anthrax guitarist Rob Caggiano was hired . Michael Schøn Poulsen said in an interview that he really liked Caggiano's work for The Damned Things and the Anthrax album Worship Music . The recordings took place in the PUK Studios in Randers . The collaboration with Caggiano turned out to be inspiring, according to singer Michael Schøn Poulsen, so that Caggiano was introduced as an official band member in early February 2013.

“And then I asked Rob [Caggiano] to put in some solos for the record, all of which we really enjoyed. I gave Rob three of my songs, each with a few gaps. I was very excited to see how he would fill these gaps. His suggestions were so good that we all used them. "

- Michael Schøn Poulsen

As with the previous album, several guest musicians appear. So King Diamond in the song Room 24 to hear. The Canadian Sarah Blackwood from the band Walk off the Earth sings at Lonesome Rider . Other guest musicians are Paul Lamb ( harmonica ), Rod Sinclair ( banjo ), Anders Pedersen ( slide guitar ) and Jakob Øelund ( double bass )

According to singer Michael Schøn Poulsen, around half of the songs deal with stories about gunslingers from the Wild West of the 19th century. Some characters are legends from this era such as Doc Holliday or Lola Montez , some other fictional personalities. The album title is inspired by the so-called Spaghetti Westerns. Although only half of the songs are related to the subject, Michael Schøn Poulsen described Outlaw Gentleman & Shady Ladies as a concept album .

The first single, Cape of Our Hero, focuses on a boy who, inspired by comics, sees his father as a superhero. After the death of his father, the boy dreams of being taken into the air by an angel . The boy is given a cloak and looks for his father. The lyrics for the song Room 24 were inspired by a scary event in a hotel room in the United States when Schøn Poulsen experienced sleep paralysis .

“I woke up before sunrise, but couldn't move my arms or legs. I couldn't speak either. Everything around me went dark, I had the feeling that someone or something was pressing on my chest , I thought I was having a heart attack or choking . I asked myself: Does this feel like dying? "

- Michael Schøn Poulsen

Dead But Rising was inspired by a trip that Schøn Poulsen made to Tupelo , the birthplace of Elvis Presley . On the way there, his navigation system failed and he followed the road signs and saw an eagle flying overhead. This eagle reminded him of an eagle tattoo his late father once wore. The Sinner Is You explores the question of why death always chooses the good people and not those who deserve to die.

Reviews

Frank Albrecht from the German magazine Rock Hard wrote in his review that the album would "definitely not be the best record of the Danes", but still "has a lot of class". Some songs are “ tailored to the mainstream market”, but have “catchy melodies and catchy refrains ”. The only point of criticism is the “quite tame production” because Volbeat “has more rough edges than can be partially heard”. He awarded eight out of ten points. For Peter Kubaschk from the online magazine Powermetal.de , Outlaw Gentlemen & Shady Ladies should “surely meet the expectations of most fans”, although he “lacks the liveliness and explosiveness that characterized the band's early works”. Kubaschk rated the album with eight out of ten points. Heiko Eschenbach from the online magazine Metal.de was more critical . In his opinion there is “a lot of mediocrity that is nice to hear, but not a single outstanding hit that you want to whistle into over and over”. Eschenbach rated Outlaw Gentlemen & Shady Ladies with seven out of ten points.
