The Damned Things is a hard rock / heavy metal band from New York . The band, founded in 2009, consists of members of the bands Alkaline Trio , Anthrax , Every Time I Die and Fall Out Boy and is known as a supergroup . The Damned Things are signed to Nuclear Blast and have released two studio albums so far. The band name comes from the lyrics of the song Black Betty by the group Ram Jam .

history

In 2006 the guitarists Scott Ian (Anthrax) and Joe Trohman (Fall Out Boy) met. After a jam session together , the musicians began to write songs together. In the years that followed, the band was expanded to include singer Keith Buckley (Every Time I Die), drummer Andy Hurley and guitarist Rob Caggiano (Anthrax). By the end of 2009 the musicians had written enough material and decided to record an album. On June 1, 2010, the band played their first concert in New York. Josh Newton from the band Everytime I Die took over the still vacant position of bassist .

This was followed by concerts in Europe and appearances at the Download Festival , Rock am Ring and Copenhell . After that, the band returned to the US and recorded their debut album Ironiclast . The album, produced by Rob Caggiano and Joe Trohman , was released on December 14, 2010 in North America via Island Records . In its first week of sales, 6,200 albums were sold in the United States. The album reached number one on the Heatseekers chart , which includes artists who have never been placed in the top hundred of the US album charts with an album .

In the spring of 2011, The Damned Things played a North American tour supporting Volbeat , before appearing in the summer at the Download, Hellfest , Graspop Metal Meeting , Sonisphere and Rock on the Range festivals. A performance at the Soundwave Festival in Australia was planned, but the festival was canceled. In October 2011, the band released the unreleased song Trophy Widow for the soundtrack of the video game Batman: Arkham City . The Damned Things were named best new band at the Metal Hammer Golden Gods Awards 2011. The band also received a nomination for best new band at the Revolver Golden Gods Awards , but the award went to the Black Veil Brides .

In the following years it became quiet around the band. Rob Caggiano joined Volbeat and left The Damned Things as did Josh Newton. In December 2016, drummer Andy Hurley announced that the band had recorded five songs for an EP . Over time, the EP became the second studio album High Crimes , which was produced by Jay Ruston and was released on April 26, 2019 via Nuclear Blast. The position of bassist was taken over by Dan Andriano from the band Alkaline Trio . A US tour with supporting acts Crobot and He Is Lengend has been announced for May 2019 .

style

The music of The Damned Things differs significantly from that of the three main bands. While Anthrax plays Thrash Metal , Every Time I Die is a metalcore band and Fall Out Boy is an alternative rock band. When Scott Ian and Joe Trohman met, the musicians spoke a lot about their love for bands like Thin Lizzy and Black Sabbath . The musicians draw further influences from hard and classic rock . Most of the band's songs were written by Rob Caggiano and Joe Trohman, who are rarely or not at all involved in the compositions in their main bands. After Rob Caggiano left, Joe Trohman wrote most of the songs. With the second studio album High Crimes , grunge influences came to the fore. According to singer Keith Buckley, "people should hear that the musicians grew up with bands like Nirvana and Soundgarden ".
