The Sonisphere Festival is a music festival in which mainly bands from the fields of metal and hard rock perform. In contrast to usual music festivals, it is not held at a specific location every year, but goes on tour with various bands internationally.

history

The festival is organized by Stuart Galbraith and his company Kilimanjaro. Among other things, Galbraith organized the Monsters of Rock Festival in the early 1980s and its successor, the Download Festival in Donington Park, England, since 2003 . In 2008 Galbraith announced a festival with a similar focus as the Download Festival. At the time, two or three international locations were already being considered.

2009

In 2009 the festival took place as a one-day festival in various European locations: Nijmegen (Netherlands), at Hockenheimring (Germany), Barcelona (Spain), Hultsfred (Sweden), Pori (Finland) and Knebworth (England). The premiere was the festival in Goffert Park in Nijmegen, Holland on June 20, 2009.

2010

In 2010, in addition to a three-day festival in Great Britain, events in Switzerland and Turkey as well as Romania, Bulgaria, Finland, Greece, Sweden, Spain, the Czech Republic and Poland followed. In 2010 there was no Sonisphere Festival in Germany or Holland. Among the artists announced for the 2010 edition were well-known hard rock and metal bands with Rammstein , Iron Maiden , Alice Cooper , Mötley Crüe , Motörhead and Iggy & The Stooges . Metallica , Megadeth , Slayer and Anthrax played together for the first time as "The Big Four of Thrash" in Poland at a festival on June 15th as part of the Sonisphere Festival. The recording of the performance on June 22, 2010 in the Vasil Levski National Stadium in Sofia was broadcast live in 450 cinemas in the USA and in a further 350 cinemas in Europe , Canada and Latin America as well as a concert DVD / Blu-Ray with the title The Big Four Live from Sofia, Bulgaria released. The four bands played the song Am I Evil? by the band Diamond Head .
