The Vasil Levski National Stadium ( Bulgarian : Национален стадион "Васил Левски" / National Stadium "Wasil Levski" ) is a football and athletics stadium in the Bulgarian capital Sofia and is the largest stadium in the country with a capacity of 43,632 seats. The venue was intended for the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2014 Winter Olympics , for which Bulgaria failed to apply in 2006.
The stadium, named after the Bulgarian national hero Vasil Levski , was opened in 1953 and renovated in 1966 and 2002. In 1957 the stadium hosted the European basketball championship . In addition to athletics events, the Wassil-Lewski-Nationalstadion is home to the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League football matches . It is also the venue for the games of the Bulgarian national soccer team and the finals of the national soccer cup competition .
The stadium offers the possibility for judo, gymnastics, basketball, boxing and aerobics. It also has fencing, table tennis and fitness halls, two conference halls and three restaurants.
The predecessor of the Vasil Levski National Stadium was the Junak Stadium , built in 1924 , of which remnants can still be found to the southwest of the current stadium.
