Turisas is a band formed in Finland in 1997 by Mathias Nygård and Jussi Wickström. It is named after an ancient Finnish god of war .

style

Singer Mathias Nygård

An exact classification of the style is difficult because the band mixes many varieties of metal . In general, however, one can say that Turisas mainly play epic Viking Metal mixed with Finnish folk (and also Humppa ). The band itself describes their music as "Battle Metal".

During their performances, the band members use a black and red " war paint ", which is a trademark of the band. According to Nygård, black acrylic paint and film blood are used for this.

history

Olli Vänskä

Turisas have been under contract with Century Media since 2003 , where they released their debut album Battle Metal in 2004 . Then the band went u. a. with the Apocalyptic Horsemen on a European tour. They were supported by various guest musicians on the violin and accordion .

Guitarist Georg Laakso suffered serious injuries in a car accident in November 2005. Due to many mishaps by the police and the authorities, he could only be admitted to the intensive care unit very late. His condition was very critical for a long time. On December 14, 2005, however, the band announced that Laakso is back on the mend. However, on July 12, 2006, Laakso announced his departure. Due to a spinal cord injury that he sustained in the accident, he must have been in a wheelchair all his life. As announced on the official homepage, the band has decided not to look for a new guitarist. Instead, Jussi Wickström will appear as a single guitarist and a guest musician will appear as the bassist.

In June 2007 the album The Varangian Way was released , which was recorded in March 2007 at Sound Supreme Studio. It is a concept album that describes a journey by the Varangians across Eastern European rivers to Constantinople and their experiences. The single To Holmgard and Beyond was released on May 16, 2007 in advance and entered the Finnish single charts at number 13. Turisas was also represented in 2007, after a UK headlining tour (with the support Abgott ) together with Annihilator as support on the European tour of Iced Earth .

Spanish rock hard and the Belgian MindView was The Varangian Way elected album of the month in the Finnish charts, it reached No. 17. In addition to this album, the band in the summer of the Boney-M. -Song Rasputin for a cover single on. In spring 2008 the band played a European tour, with 17-year-old Netta Skog helping out on the accordion. Participation in the Paganfest with Moonsorrow and others was planned for April 2008 . However, Turisas only took part in the US performances. In November 2008 they headlined the Ultima Ratio Festival with Korpiklaani and Kampfar .

Netta Skog

In October 2007, Netta Skog, who was already playing the accordion for Turisas in the studio, took over the place at the accordion for a few gigs because Turisas' accordionist Lisko Mäkinen had unexpectedly broken off contact with the band. In early 2008, he was finally released due to a lack of communication. A few months later, Netta Skog was hired for the live performances. In the meantime she has been accepted as a permanent member of the band; Nygård said on the DVD A Finnish Summer with Turisas : "So at the moment [this line-up with Netta Skog] is the band for us."

In early March 2010, the band announced that they would be working on the recordings of their third album called Stand Up And Fight . The release date in Germany was February 25, 2011.

In early September 2011 the band announced that Netta Skog and Hannes Horma would leave the band and they would be replaced by Jukka-Pekka Miettinen (bass) and Robert Engstrand (keyboard).

In November 2012 it was announced on the band's website that drummer Tuomas Lehtonen and tour bassist Jukka-Pekka Miettinen had left the band. Jaakko Jakku was introduced as the new drummer.
