Korpiklaani ( finn. "Clan of the wilderness," even "clan of the forest") is a Finnish folk metal - band from Lahti with strong influences from traditional folk music. The band's lyrics deal with mythological themes as well as nature and celebration, with pure instrumental pieces also being included in their repertoire. They themselves see their music influenced by the humppa .

history

Korpiklaani at the Metalmania Festival 2007 in Katowice .

Korpiklaani emerged in 2003 from the previously disbanded band Shaman . While Shaman still focused on the language and culture of the Sami , Korpiklaani should be accessible to a larger mass. This can also be seen in the use of English and Finnish texts. There should also be more influences from traditional Finnish music and metal .

In the same year, after more members had joined, the first album Spirit of the Forest was released on November 10, 2003 by Napalm Records . In the summer of 2004, work began on the successor, Voice of Wilderness , which was presented on January 24, 2005. On April 21, 2006 the third album Tales Along This Road was released , which was presented as part of a tour through Europe. The album Tervaskanto ( Finnish. "Resinous tree stump") was released on June 29, 2007. For the first time there is a bonus DVD that comes with the "limited edition" of the album. The DVD contains the entire performance of the group at Wacken Open Air 2006.

On March 21, 2008, the fifth studio album Korven Kuningas was released . For Keep on Gallopping , the third song on the album, a single and a music video were released on February 13th. Shortly after the release, the band played the European festival tour Paganfest with Moonsorrow and Ensiferum, among others .

The sixth studio album Karkelo was released on June 26, 2009. The Finnish title means something like "celebration". The single Vodka was released in advance on May 25th as CD , digipack and picture disc . The recordings for the album began on February 15, 2009. In addition to the CD version, Karkelo was also available in a limited edition of 250 copies on brown vinyl .

On February 4, 2011, the seventh album Ukon Wacka was released. The title track was released as a download single on December 21, 2010 and contains Päät Pois Tai Hirteen , the second track of the album, as the B-side. The album includes the song Tequila , for which a video was released on January 3, 2011.

Juho Kauppinen at Myötätuulirock 2011

In September 2011 Korpiklaani announced that violinist Jaakko "Hittavainen" Lemmetty was no longer part of the band due to health problems. In his place came Teemu Eurola, who left the band during the current tour. On February 22nd, 2012 it was announced that Tuomas Rounakari will be the violinist of the group from now on.

On January 26, 2012, the eighth album named Kunnia was announced. On May 9, 2012, the revised album title was released as Manala , the album was released on August 3, 2012. Tuomas Rounakari worked on it for the first time on a Korpiklaani album. The song Metsälle , which was released as a single in 2011, is included on the album.

On March 13, 2013, the band announced via Facebook that long-time accordion player Juho Kauppinen had left the band.

Cast ( Rockharz 2019)

Occur

Appearance at the Paganfest 2008 in Munich.

The band is very close to nature and describes itself as a "group from the Finnish forests".

This attitude is also often reflected in the lyrics. Themes from nature such as hunting ( Hunting Song ), traveling ( Journey Man ), the forests ( Spirit of the Forest ) or the earth ( Mother Earth ) are sung about. There are also a number of songs that are often played live due to their catchy melodies ( Beer Beer , Happy Little Boozer ).

At festivals and after concerts, the band members often mingle with the audience, watch other groups perform or have themselves photographed with fans. When performing, singer Järvelä regularly distributes free beer to the audience or tries, as far as the architecture of the building or the stage allows, to climb along struts in the ceiling or walls.

The band from Finland has most of its fans abroad. In their homeland, the music of Korpiklaanis is perceived by the members as "old people music with heavy metal guitars".
