Shaman was a Finnish folk metal band founded in 1993 , which was best known for the extraordinary mixture of Sami folklore with rock and metal . The band Korpiklaani emerged from Shaman in 2003 . The only permanent member was the guitarist and singer Jonne Järvelä .

history

The band's first release was in 1998 the one-track demo Ođđa máilbmi ( Sami : New World ). On the first album, Idja (Sami: Night ), which was released in 1999, the song Ođđa máilbmi was released again. Shamániac , the second album, was released in 2002.

In 2003 Järvelä broke up the band to form Korpiklaani .

music

Shaman combined Sami instruments such as the shaman drum with those of a typical rock / metal band ( electric guitar , electric bass , drums ) and keyboard in their songs . The compositions vary between ballads and heavier folk-metal songs, which often also take up Humppa elements. In addition to clear vocals, which are mostly joked , Shamániac predominantly features harder, croaking vocals that are partly similar to growling .

The songs on Shamániac in particular are reminiscent of the first Korpiklaani releases. The song Vuola lávlla was later only given a different text and re-released under the name Beer, Beer by Korpiklaani.

Texts

More than half of all songs have no “right” text at all, the singing there consists of pure joik. The few songs that have lyrics are usually very short and always written in Sami .
