Moonsorrow is a pagan metal - band from Finland .

history

Janne Perttilä (guitar) at Party.San 2017.
Ville Sorvali (vocals) at Myötätuulirock 2011.
Mitja Harvilahti (guitar) at Party.San 2017.

The band was founded in 1995 by Ville and Henri Sorvali (also keyboard player from Finntroll ). Their idea was to combine Finnish folklore with metal . The first demo cassette was Thorns of Ice . However, half of the recordings disappeared in an unexplained manner, and so the tape remained unpublished for the time being. In the spring of 1997 her debut demo Metsä ('Forest') was released to the public .

At the beginning of 1999 the demo Tämä ikuinen talvi ('This Eternal Winter', Plasmatica Records) was released and it was at this point that drummer Marko Tarvonen joined the band.

In 2001 the band's debut album was released, entitled Suden uni ('Dream of a Wolf') via Plasmatica Records. Then Mitja Harvilahti and Markus Eurén joined the band and their first live performances took place.

In 2003, Kivenkantaja, the band's most successful album to date, was released on the Finnish label Spinefarm Records , which combined symphonic songs with progressive influences. It combines Finnish folklore with symphonic keyboard sounds, hard metal guitars, aggressive screeching vocals and epic choirs.

Kivenkantaja's progressive approach was continued with the album Verisäkeet (2005). The album was characterized by long songs of up to 20 minutes in length. The album Viides Luku - Hävitetty contains a total of two songs of 30 minutes and 26 minutes in length.

In February 2008, the release date for Moonsorrow's first EP entitled Tulimyrsky EP was set on April 26, 2008. The postponement of the publication date was announced on February 28, 2008 and this was set for April 30th for worldwide publication. Exceptions were Germany, Austria and Switzerland, where the EP was released on May 9th. The mini-album was released worldwide on the announced date via Spikefarm Records and in Germany, Austria and Switzerland via the German label Drakkar Entertainment . It was recorded in the Finnish Jive Studio in Helsinki and contains five tracks, consisting of two cover versions (Moonsorrow cover Metallica and Merciless ), two re-releases of old Moonsorrow demo songs and the theme song Tulimyrsky .

As part of the Paganfest tour in April 2008, during which Moonsorrow performed together with Týr , Korpiklaani , Ensiferum and Eluveitie , accusations arose in advance of a performance in the Berlin scene club SO36 on April 17th that they would become Nazi bands at a more left-wing venue let occur. The allegation was based on the fact that the s in the Moonsorrows band logo was based on the SS rune and that the lyrics were anti-Semitic. This accusation was clearly rejected by the bands and the promoter. Moonsorrow posted a statement on their website and posted a video showing Heri von Týr and Ville von Moonsorrow personally speaking.

After the EP Tulimyrsky , Drakkar Entertainment re-released all Moonsorrow albums on May 30, 2008.

At the end of February 2011 the album Varjoina kuljemme kuolleiden maassa was released .

On April 1, 2016 Moonsorrow released their seventh studio album Jumalten aika (in German 'Age of the Gods') via Century Media . The song Suden tunti was released via music video on March 21, 2016 and is also the first official music video in the band's history.

style

music

Moonsorrow play epic metal with various influences, including from Nordic folklore and black metal. They call their music "Epic Pagan Metal " or "Epic Heathen Metal". The epic length of the earlier Moonsorrow songs culminated in the album Viides Luku - Hävitetty with two almost half-hour tracks. The follow-up publication Tulimyrsky contains, in addition to the almost half-hour title track, again relatively short pieces.

Texts

The lyrics of the band are written almost exclusively in Finnish and deal mainly with mythological topics related to Nordic mythology . For example, the song Sankaritarina from the album Voimasta ja kunniasta is a direct translation from the Hávamál . In addition, Finnish and Scandinavian traditions, legends and poetry are taken up and, as is usual for pagan metal bands, the fight against and liberation from imposed Christianity is sung.

The EP Tulimyrsky also features three songs in English , namely a cover of the Metallica track For Whom the Bell Tolls , a remake of the song Hvergelmir of their demo CD Metsä and a cover of the Merciless song Back to North .
