history

Kampfar was founded by Dolk in 1994 after separating from his previous band Mock. He explained his motivation to turn away from pure Black Metal to Legacy magazine in 2007 as follows:

“I wanted to create something that was more honest and down to earth than the countless bands without substance that make you angry . I wanted to create something that corresponds 100% to me as a person and a musician. Therefore Kampfar could not be satanistic because I never was myself. [...] "

- Dolk

Dolk wrote the song Kampfar in 1994 and arranged it for bass. Then he looked for a guitarist. Thomas joined him and together they wrote the song Hymne and released the MCD Kampfar in November 1996 and almost nine months later in July 1997 the full-length album Mellom Skogkledde Aaser . As a duo with two albums, they composed new songs for MCD Norse and the album Fra Underverdenen , both of which were released in 1999.

After the album was released, an inactive period followed due to personal matters. Dolk began to play in the band Gruesome , where he met Jon and acquired for Kampfar. Jon was now a permanent member and the trio began rehearsing again.

Drummer II13 joined the band in the summer of 2003. The band worked on new songs and finally the first live appearance took place in mid-2004 at the Moshfest in Halden , which is not far from their hometown Fredrikstad. The concerts were quite successful, so that, after a few appearances in Norway, Kampfar has played in many European countries, including Germany , the Benelux countries and Spain . Kampfar also headlined the Ravnferd 2006 tour. Kvass was recorded between November 2005 and January 2006 at the Silvertone Studio in Fredrikstad. The producer was Rune Jørgensen.

On December 7, 2010, guitarist Thomas announced his departure via the band's Myspace profile. He did not give any further reasons, but affirmed that the harmony between him and the band was still very good.

The fifth studio album, Mare , was released in March 2011, followed by the albums Djevelmakt (2014) and Profan in 2015.

On August 17, 2017, the band announced via Facebook that their last appearance in Germany would take place at the Wolfszeit Festival, two days later the statement was generalized. Reasons were not given. During the performance, the statement was repeated that this was their last show, again without explanation.

On May 3, 2019, they released their eighth album Ofidian's Manifesto .

A tour through Europe with Taake is planned for 2021.

style

Kampfar's music is inspired by Norse mythology , nature and folklore . The reason for taking up these elements in the texts and in the music of Kampfar emerges from the following statement:

Paganism , human superstition , life itself and, last but not least, nature itself have always formed the essence of Kampfar. Without nature there would be no Kampfar, because it has always been the force that has inspired and driven me to write music. Nature determines my soul life! [...] So you can say [...] nature is my religion! "

- Dolk

The lyrics are mostly in Norwegian . Musically, the band moves between raw black or pagan metal and classic (Nordic) folklore. This is due to the fact that Dolk (vocals) in his earlier band history was influenced by black metal, Thomas (guitar), however, by more classical folklore.
