Behemoth is a Polish extreme metal band. It was initially black metal , but in the course of its history elements of death metal were gradually integrated into its style. They are now well-known representatives of both genres. The band name comes from the monster of Jewish / Christian mythology.

history

The band was founded in 1991 in Gdansk by the singer Adam Michał "Nergal" Darski , under the name Baphomet . The band's music was initially based on the Norwegian bands as well as Venom , Bathory , Samael and the early Celtic Frost / Hellhammer ; Nergal names bands like Tiamat , Beherit , Samael, Blasphemy and Morbid Angel as the main influences of the time . He later changed the name to Behemoth; he also runs other projects such as Hefeystos, December's Fire, Damnation and Voodoo Gods. At the beginning the situation for the band was both financially and technically difficult, as Nergal mentions: “Of course we didn't have any money either, especially when it came to equipment, we really only had junk at the time […]! [...] It wasn't easy, we couldn't handle our instruments properly yet, we hardly had any. "

In 1992 the first demo recording called Endless Damnation appeared on the label Pagan Records, which also released the second demo The Return of the Northern Moon in the same year, which was sold more than 2,500 times in a very short time; on this Rob Darken from Graveland helped out as keyboard player . In 1993 the third demo followed, … From the Pagan Vastlands , which was sold more than 3,000 times. In contrast to the purely satanic texts on The Return of the Northern Moon , there are also allusions to the Scandinavian nature and the history of the Vikings, which, however, is mixed with satanic elements. These demos appeared in a variety of formats, including legal and semi-legal versions on CD and LP, as well as a large number of bootleg recordings .

Inspired by the Norwegian “Inner Circle”, The Temple of the Fullmoon (TTF) was created in Poland, whose founders included Nergal, Blasphemous from Veles and Venom from Xantotol. The order also included the bands Infernum , Mysteries, Veles, Fullmoon and Graveland, whose founder Rob Darken called him a more idealistic copy of the Norwegian circle. Nergal later distanced himself from this organization. This was followed by an anti-Behemoth campaign by the TTF and threats against Nergal and Behemoth.

In 1994 the band released their EP And the Forests Dreams Eternally with the support of the Italian label Entropy Productions . On this, Behemoth referred to Slavic geography and mythology, which was also linked to Satanism.

In 1995 the Pagan Records label released Behemoth's first album Sventevith (Storming Near the Baltic) ; this was also recorded with poor equipment, which did not change until around 1996 or 1997. The band, especially band founder Nergal, presents this album in the retrospective as the first turning point in the four-year history of the band, as it received an all-round positive international response. This is how the German label Solistitium Records became aware of them. Due to a lack of financial support, Behemoth ended the collaboration.

In 1996 Behemoth appeared for the first time, both in Poland and on the Pagan Triumph Tour together with their compatriots from Christ Agony, the Norwegian band Helheim and the Thuringian band Menhir .

With the album Pandemonic Incantations , the last release by Solistitum in cooperation with Novum Vox Mortis in Poland, Behemoth moved away from Black Metal in favor of progressive Death Metal influences, which, as well as the "rediscovery" of satanic elements, which displaced the pagan attitude, caused controversial reactions. Although the album was only moderately distributed due to poor label management, many fans accused the band of treason for the reasons mentioned above. The band is particularly hated within the Polish NSBM scene. She accuses the band of rock star airs and Darski of inflated self-assessment, as well as constant ideological change, from a reference to Viking themes to expressions of Slavic pride to satanic Death Metal, which makes them unbelievable.

At this time parts of the line-up changed and Behemoth signed up for the Italian label Avantgarde Music , which released the technical / experimental death metal album Satanica . This tendency was also maintained in the following releases, with occasional label and line-up changes. With the album Thelema.6 Behemoth referred to Aleister Crowley's Thelema , with the title of the successor Zos Kia Cultus on Austin Osman Spares Zos Kia Cultus.

Behemoth (2004)

The album Demigod , released in 2004, also brought new experimental influences with it. By Karl Sanders ' participation stylistic parallels emerged for US death metal band Nile . In addition, Demigod deals with philosophical topics as well as with Nile as well as those of Egyptian culture and history.

In the booklet of the album The Apostasy , published in 2007, part of the article about automatic writing was published on the English language Wikipedia . The recordings for the next album began on February 16, 2009.

The album Evangelion was released six months later, on August 7th, 2009. It reached gold status in Poland in November 2009 with 15,000 units sold .

In August 2010 it was announced that Nergal was seriously ill with leukemia and was in need of a stem cell transplant . On January 17, 2011, Nergal was able to leave the Gdańsk University Hospital after receiving stem cells from an anonymous donor three weeks earlier.

The tenth studio album The Satanist was released on February 3, 2014 . A US tour has been announced for the summer of 2014. Together with Slipknot , the band was on a European tour in 2020.
