Beherit is one of the first Finnish black metal bands.

history

The band was founded in 1989 under the name Pseudochrist and later renamed Beherit . Within half a year they recorded three demos titled Seventh Blasphemy , Morbid Rehearsals and Demonomancy . The third of these demos caught the attention of Turbo Music, which enabled the band to record a single called Dawn of Satan's Millennium . The four songs of this single were released together with the seven songs of the Demonomancy demo on an album under the name The Oath of Black Blood . This release is not recognized as official by the band.

In 1993 the album Drawing Down the Moon was released, which became a classic within the scene.

This was followed by two albums, which Nuclear Holocausto recorded single-handedly and which can be assigned to the dark ambient . In 1996 he broke up the band.

In 2008 Nuclear Holocausto resumed the band activities with Sodomatic Slaughter and the two new musicians Sami Tenetz ( Thy Serpent ) and Abyss and began work on a new album. Engram was finally released on April 9, 2009 and entered the Finnish album charts at number 10. This album is based on Black Metal again, but deviates from the style of the old recordings. In 2011, At the Devil's Studio was released in 1990 . This is the lost first studio album by Beherit, which was recorded in 1990. The recordings for this were considered lost for a long time and were rediscovered after 21 years. These are in the "noisy" style of the demos and the debut EP.

Surname

The name Beherit was taken from Anton Szandor LaVey's Satanic Bible . They claim that Beherit is a Syrian name for Satan ; Holocausto Vengeance adopted this claim. This name does not exist in Syriac; In various Semitic languages there is a root bhr 'shine' / 'shine' / 'shine', in Mandean next to this root the term bhrt for a spirit of light. Beherit as a devil's name appears in modern literature, where it is sometimes equated with the demon Berith from Ars Goetia . Its name in turn is reminiscent of the Hebrew בְּרִית ' Bund ' as the synonymous bryt in Samaritan-Palestinian Aramaic .

Music genre

At first Beherit sounded like Sarcófago and Death , singer Holocausto Vengeance also stated blasphemy as a major influence. The style of the first recordings is described as primitive, noisy and chaotic.

Holocausto Dark Ambient played on H418ov21.C and Electric Doom Synthesis .

With the album Engram , according to Diana Glöckner from Metal Hammer, “the return to old values” took place, the album offered “the best black metal of the mangy kind”. Here, according to Glöckner's colleague Melanie Aschenbrenner, the band plays “in a tried and tested manner”. She describes the music as "carnage".

ideology

Concerning its attitude to Satanism , Nuclear Holocausto expressed itself inconsistently in the first phase of Beherit. In Psychopathological , he pointed to the Satanic Bible as the source for the name Beherit, but refused to answer the subject. In the 1990s, however, he referred to elements of "modern" Satanism according to Anton Szandor LaVey and the Church of Satan founded by him (like most of the Nine Satanic Statements ) and had connections u. a. on Kerry Bolton's Order of the Left Hand Path. Because of its proximity to ideas of the Church of Satan, Beherit was attacked, among others, by Varg Vikernes von Burzum , a member of the Norwegian scene at the time; conversely, Holocausto described the anti-LaVey attitude of the Norwegian Black Metallers, for example, as childish. Around the time that Drawing Down the Moon was being made, he became increasingly interested in Odinism and Ásatrú and claimed to be an Odinist. In the meantime he has "nothing to do with satanic organizations for years".
