Sarcófago ( Portuguese for ' sarcophagus ') is a Brazilian thrash and black metal band from Belo Horizonte . Along with Sepultura, she is one of the founders of the South American metal scene .

history

Sarcófago was founded in 1985 in Belo Horizonte ( Minas Gerais , Brazil) by Wagner "Antichrist" Lamounier. The singer and lead guitarist previously played for Sepultura. Together with Zeber “Butcher”, Juninho “Pussy Fucker” and “Leprous” he launched Sarcófago. From the beginning the band had an anti-Christian and satanic image. In 1986 three demos were released which made the band known in the underground through tape trading . In addition, two songs appeared on the internationally published compilation Warfare Noise on the label Cogumelo Records . Gerald "Incubus" Minelli joined the band as bass player, the rest of the line-up shrunk to a trio. A permanent drummer has not been found since that time. Mineli and Lamounier help out with session musicians.

The first full-fledged album INRI was also released on Cogumelo in 1987. It contains raw, primitive Thrash Metal, which seemed very underproduced and showed clear punk influences. The unpolished style made the band popular in the underground. The competitive situation with Sepultura came to a head. In 1988 the second album Rotting was released .

The 1991 album Laws of the Scourge was again made up of four. 1992 coverte Finnish band Impaled Nazarene song The Black Vomit and made the band so well known in Europe, where just the second black metal wave spread. Among other things, Euronymous von Mayhem and Fenriz von Darkthrone declared themselves influenced by the Brazilian band, which was one of the first to perform with Corpsepaint .

In 1992 there was a fight between the two bands on the sidelines of a gig with Ratos de Porão . The dispute related to the support post for a performance by DRI DRI tried to intervene in the brawl. The case kept the Brazilian metal press busy for several years and contributed to Sarcófago's poor image.

The full-length album Hate was released in 1994 and The Worst in 1997 . With the two albums, the band changed its image. The satanic texts were retained, but the outfit changed: the long hair and the corpse paint fell away. The band justified the move with the commercialization of modern black metal styles:

“We respect those who still have it, but nowadays any trendy who listens to Pearl Jeam or Nirvana lets his hair grow to get chicks. […] Since the beginning Sarcófago tried to be different. Nowadays, for example, nine out of ten new bands that show up is using corpsepaint. When we used it, everybody bashed us, they said that we were ridiculous. When we had our hair cut, everybody criticized. Nowadays there's a number of bands who have their hair cut as well. Even the famous ones. "

Except for the EP Crust , released in 2000 , on which experiments with electronic music and the song FOMBM (Fuck Off the Melodic Black Metal) was used to draw a distinction from modern Black Metal, the band was pretty quiet. In 2004 Fenriz released the song Satanic Lust on his compilation Fenriz Presents… The Best of Old-School Black Metal .

All albums were later reissued. However, the re-releases are difficult to obtain. There are also numerous bootlegs , some with live or demo recordings in MC, vinyl or CD format.
