Fenriz (born November 28, 1971 in Oslo as Leif Nagell ; real name Gylve Fenris Nagell ) is a Norwegian musician and politician, who is best known as the drummer and lyricist of the two-man band Darkthrone . He is an extremely productive musician who has been a member of numerous bands, performed solo appearances and participated in numerous other projects spanning music genres.

Life

Fenriz first came into contact with heavy metal at the age of three when he received the album Sweet Freedom from the band Uriah Heep for his birthday . Later he became more and more interested in rock and metal bands such as B. The Doors and Metallica . Since 1986 he has also been a lover of Bathory's music .

In the same year the band Darkthrone was formed; Initially, according to Fenriz, the band could not even play their instruments, but developed into a technically adept death metal band. At the same time, Fenriz was also a member of the band Valhall , which was rehearsing in his basement. In 1989 he started the solo project Isengard , which was initially based on Death Metal. Towards the end of 1989 he came across a song by the Hungarian band Tormentor on a compilation , which he was enthusiastic about and through which he saw metal in a new light; at that time the underground was dominated by death metal and in his opinion rather uninteresting. First Darkthrone continued to play death metal after but the other band members, with the exception of bassist Dag Nilsen increasingly for the sound of Bathory and Celtic Frost interested, turned the band in 1991 musical basis of these interests and the influence of Euronymous the black metal to and shaped this decisively. It was around this time that Nagell also adopted the pseudonym Fenriz. That same year, Fenriz left Valhall to focus more on Darkthrone. In 1992 he adopted his pseudonym, spelled Fenris, as part of his real name. Fenriz founded the ambient project Neptune Towers and participated in the 1995 project Storm by Satyricon singer Satyr; He also helped out as a percussionist with Vortebekk Spaceband. Since 1995, Fenriz has concentrated on Darkthrone, whose music has moved between punk and heavy metal since 2006 , and stopped all solo projects. He only appears occasionally as a guest musician.

Fenriz played together with Phil Anselmo from Pantera , Satyr, Maniac from Mayhem and Killjoy from Necrophagia in a project called Eibon, but is at odds with Satyr and is therefore not part of a possible continuation of the project.

Fenriz works as a DJ , currently lives in Oslo and has a label with Nocturno Culto under the name Tyrant Syndicate Productions, which is a sub-label of Peaceville Records . In 2004, Fenriz released a compilation album in collaboration with Peaceville, entitled Fenriz Presents… The Best of Old-School Black Metal , containing selected pieces of music from bands such as Celtic Frost , Hellhammer , Blasphemy and Burzum . In 2009 the compilation Trapped Under Vice was released , which moves between Black, Death and Thrash Metal.

He also writes reviews and columns, but prefers to work on Darkthrone's Myspace weblog, in which he recommends a new band every week, rather than regularly writing columns. In September 2016 an application for the city council of his hometown Kolbotn ended successfully. Fenriz was asked, had himself photographed with a cat for his election poster and given the caption “Please don't choose me”. He is now a deputy member of the city council for the Venstre party .
