Tormentor is a Hungarian black / thrash metal band from Budapest .

Band history

Tormentor was founded in 1986 by Attila Csihar . The band performed live in Hungary between 1986 and 1990 and released the two demos The Seventh Day of Doom (1987) and Anno Domini (1988). They played fast thrash metal, which was now and then supplemented by epic passages in the style of the old Bathory ; Besides Bathory, Destruction was also an influence of the band. The band gave some gigs in Hungary, which were chaotic. At that time, due to the prevailing communist system and state censorship, she was unable to officially release the second demo as an album. About tape tradingHowever, the music of Tormentors became known in the metal underground far beyond the national borders. In 1990 Anno Domini was released on the Hungarian underground label Evil Records as a professional cassette version with a color-printed cover (the famous devil with a silver tray and nun's head artwork). This release contains a slightly different mix than the already known versions that were published by Nocturnal Art Productions (1995) and Saturnus Productions (2007) and the order of the titles has been changed a little and the title Anno Domini has been omitted entirely. This version is one of the coveted collector's items among fans today. In 1991 the band had to split up.

Csihar was able to establish contacts with the Norwegian black metal scene and sang on Mayhem 's first studio album De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas . The second demo, Anno Domini, was originally supposed to appear via Deathlike Silence Productions , but due to the murder of Øystein Aarseth, it was no longer available. Through these contacts, however, Csihar got to know Tomas "Samoth" Thormodsæter Haugen from Emperor , who finally released Anno Domini in 1995 as the fourth release on his young label Nocturnal Art Productions. In addition to this release and the singing on the Mayhem album, the band also became known for a cover version : Dissection covered the song Elisabeth Bathory , which deals with the so-called Blood Countess Erzsébet Báthory . In 2004 Csihar took over the guest vocals for this song at one of Dissection's first concerts after Jon Nödtveidt was released from prison .

In 1999 Csihar reanimated Tormentor with a new line-up and released the album Recipe Ferrum! 777 , which appeared in 2001. The album has little in common with the wild Black Metal of the past. The album was very much influenced by Hungarian folklore and contains only a few black metal elements. The work was panned by the criticism . Since the release, the band has been on hold again as Csihar is busy with his other projects and Mayhem.

Both demos were repeatedly reissued as bootlegs . In 2004, Fenriz von Darkthrone used the song Elisabeth Bathory for his compilation Fenriz Presents… The Best of Old-School Black Metal .
