Samoth (real name Tomas Thormodsæter Haugen ) is a Norwegian metal musician. He is best known as the guitarist for the band Emperor .

Life

In 1991 Samoth and Ihsahn (Vegard Sverre Tveitan) founded the band Thou Shalt Suffer , who played death metal with keyboards . That same year it was put on hold; Bassist Ildjarn founded a project of the same name , on whose demo Seven Harmonies of Unknown Truths Samoth participated as a guest singer in 1992; Under the influence of Euronymous ( Øystein Aarseth ), Ihsahn and Samoth founded the group Emperor, in which Samoth first played drums and after the entry of Thorns drummer Faust ( Bård G. Eithun ) played guitar. On a tour with Cradle of Filth he met Andrea Meyer , whom he later married and with whom he has a daughter. They are now divorced, but she still bears his real surname.

Together with Count Grishnackh ( Varg Vikernes ) von Burzum , Samoth lived for some time in the basement of the Helvete record shop in Oslo , helped him out on the Aske EP as a bass player and with him set the Skjold Church in Vindafjord on fire, for which both were sentenced to prison in 1994 were convicted. Then they kept their distance from one another. Samoth described Vikernes as insane and accused him of constantly changing his views; Vikernes countered that he had changed his mind about Samoth after he had revealed everything he knew to the police and called him a police informant. He threatened Haugen that he would not be in jail forever and that Haugen should be careful what he said if Vikernes were really insane. Vikernes also accused him of being responsible for his arrest in connection with the Skjold Church and of misrepresenting his arrest and relationship with Euronymous in the book Lords of Chaos .

In 1995 the side project Zyklon-B , founded by Samoth, recorded the EP Blood Must Be Shed , and in 1997 Emperor recorded other records for the first time after Tchort (Terje Vik Schei) and Faust had also been arrested. In 2004 the band Scum was founded, in which Samoth plays with Faust, Casey Chaos from Amen , Happy-Tom from Turbonegro and Cosmocrator from Mindgrinder.

In 2005 Samoth married again, on April 23, 2008 his wife Erin gave birth to their daughter. In 2008 he formed The Wretched End with Cosmocrator from Mindgrinder .
