Simen Hestnæs (born March 4, 1974 in Oslo ), also known under his pseudonym I.CS Vortex (Icy Simen Vortex), is a Norwegian bass player and singer. He is, or was, a member of the bands Borknagar , Arcturus and Dimmu Borgir .

Life

Hestnæs started playing the flute at the age of seven, but stopped after a year and took piano lessons from his grandmother. He later decided to play guitar and sing in a rock band. In 1991 he founded the band Lamented Souls, in which he played guitar and bass.

In 1997 he made a guest appearance with Arcturus. He sang on the three songs "Master of Disguise", "The Chaos Path" and "Painting My Horror" on the album La Masquerade Infernale together with the band's singer at the time, Kristoffer "Garm" Rygg . In the same year, the folk metal band Borknagar was looking for a singer after Rygg left, so that Hestnæs became a member of the band for four years. With him the albums The Archaic Course (1998) and Quintessence (2000) were recorded. In 1999 he recorded the album Spiritual Black Dimensions as bassist and background singer with Dimmu Borgir . In 2000 he decided to leave Borknagar to join Dimmu Borgir as a full-time member as bassist and singer.

In 2005 he became a permanent singer in the band Arcturus, with whom he recorded the album Sideshow Symphonies , which was released in the same year . On April 16, 2007 in Melbourne he began the concert with “Welcome to the last show ever of Arcturus!”, The next day this statement was confirmed by the band. Four years later, however, there was a reunion for live performances.

Dimmu Borgir fired Hestnæs in 2009 and a year later he returned to Borknagar - first as a guest musician for Universal , then as a permanent member of Urd . In 2011 he also released his solo album Storm Seeker .

After the exit of the former singer Vintersorg , he acted as lead singer for the first time on the Borknagar album True North, which was released in 2019 .

Hestnæs is married to Lise Myhre , the author of the comic strip Nemi , and has a son with her.
