Constellation is the second EP from the Norwegian metal band Arcturus . It was published by Nocturnal Art in 1994.

Creation and publication

After the release of the first EP My Angel in 1991, the singer Marius Vold left the band and Sverd switched from guitar to keyboards. Garm von Ulver and Samoth von Emperor joined Arcturus in 1993. Constellation was finally released through Samoth's record label Nocturnal Art . Since the EP was originally only intended as a promo sound carrier for an upcoming album, it was limited to 500 copies.

The four tracks from the EP were released in 1996 in newly recorded versions on the debut album Aspera hiems symfonia . There have been several new editions of Constellation together with My Angel and other partly unreleased pieces: 1997 as LP with Nocturnal Art, remastered in 2002 and with the debut album as double CD with Candlelight Records under the title Aspera hiems symfonia / Constellation / My Angel and 2012 in various CD and LP editions, each with different, unreleased bonus material at Kyrck Productions.

Track list and music

  1. Rødt and Svart - 6:09
  2. Icebound Streams and Vapors Gray - 4:42
  3. Naar Kulda Tar (Frostnetten's prologue) - 4:27
  4. Du Nordavind - 4:30

Like two years later on Aspera hiems symfonia , Arcturus already combine the double bass playing and the screeching singing of Black Metal with orchestral keyboards and choir singing, albeit in a less mature form.

reception

“All the more remarkable the quantum leap to the 'Constellation' EP: Spit in the throat of the Sturm und Drang phase of the Black Metal movement in 1993, the release, limited to 500 units, eluded it regardless of its indubitable genre (already the participation of the prominent Norwegian scene heads justified such a) being appropriated by dogmas of all kinds: Sverd's keyboard arrangements were far ahead of their time; Garm, whose reputation was already high thanks to Ulver and should probably not need excessive explanation, took over the vocals and gave them the much-praised depth; the recruitment of Samoth, a welcome guest on many combos at the time, increased Arcturus' market value enormously.
