Borknagar is a progressive metal band from Norway that was founded in 1995 as a black metal formation and originally consisted of members of the bands Molested , Enslaved , Gorgoroth , Arcturus , Immortal and Ulver .
history
Their first album Borknagar was still very much based on the raw sound of Black Metal of the early 1990s, but was still very independent in musical terms. The band developed consistently on the following albums. In the trade press, Borknagar's music is now sometimes referred to as "avant-garde black metal" or progressive metal . The voice of Andreas “Vintersorg” Hedlund , who took over the vocal part of Simen “ICS Vortex” Hestnæs (formerly Dimmu Borgir ) from the album Empiricism (2001) onwards, also set the style . Since 1999 the group has also had an organist in Lars Nedland von Solefald . Hestnæs returned to the band a few years later as bassist and second singer. On February 22, 2019, Andreas Hedlund announced that he was leaving for personal reasons after 19 years. Hestnæs will take over the main vocals from now on. On March 12th, Jostein Thomassen joined the group as an additional guitarist, who already plays with Rønnow in the bands Fracture and Profane Burial. In September 2019 the band's eleventh studio album, True North, was released, in which Bjørn Dugstad Rønnow also appeared as the new drummer.
The compositions of the group come from the founder and multi-instrumentalist Øystein G. Brun.
