Solefald ( Norwegian for sunset ) is a Norwegian music group founded in 1995 by Lars Nedland and Cornelius Jakhelln. Solefald's style can be described as melodic Black Metal , with other styles and experimental sounds flowing into the group's music. With the albums of the so-called Icelandic Odyssey , the style is also moving towards Viking Metal . The lyrics are usually in English or Norwegian.

Career

The 1995 demo featured traditional black metal. The 1997 debut album The Linear Scaffold caught the attention of the trade press and earned the group critical praise. On the tour that followed in 1998, which was contested together with Tristania and Haggard , Jakhelln and Nedland used other musicians for the first time. These, partly well-known, guest musicians initially served as support for live performances, but also worked on other albums.

The second album, Neonism , brought Solefald heavy criticism from the black metal scene, as this album was conceived as a satire on the genre and its narrow limits and made use of pop , trip-hop , reggae and punk sounds. At the time, the musicians even received a death threat from the United States. Since 1999 Nedland has also been active with Borknagar as an organist and keyboardist .

The follow-up album Pills Against the Ageless Ills shows mainly influences from progressive metal . This concept album is about two brothers named "Pornographer Cain" and "Philosopher Fuck", each looking for redemption in their own way. With the successor In Harmonia Universali , saxophones and even alphorns can be heard for the first time and the lyrics are in English, Norwegian, German and French.

In 2005 and 2006 the first parts of the Icelandic Odyssey appeared with Red for Fire and Black for Death . This is mainly about Nordic - Germanic mythology and the Vikings , and offers experimental Viking Metal.

With The Circular Drain , a compilation was published in 2008 that contains the Jernlov demo and remixes of songs from previous albums.

In 2010 the album Norrøn livskunst was released , which Solefald was nominated for the Spellemannpris for the first time .
