Tristania is a Norwegian symphonic metal / gothic metal band.

history

The band was formed in 1996 by Einar Moen, Kenneth Olsson and Morten Veland, the former and current singer of Sirenia . Moen and Veland left the band Uzi Suicide and got Olsson to join Tristania. Shortly thereafter, bassist Rune Østerhus and guitarist Anders H. Hidle were recorded.

The following year Tristania recorded the first demo and expanded to include Vibeke Stene . Based on the demo, the band signed a record deal with Napalm Records , who then released the remixed demo with new artwork as the maxi single Tristania . The official debut album Widow’s Weeds was released in early 1998 and was a mixture of symphonic metal , death metal , gothic metal and elements of classical music . A year later, the follow-up Beyond the Veil was released , which has a slight synth-rock sound through the use of many samples having.

Towards the end of 2000, Morten Veland, who had been the head of the group until then, left the band due to musical and personal differences and a little later founded Sirenia , which musically tie in with the first two Tristania releases. The songwriting was then increasingly taken over by keyboardist Eine Moen. With this change in personnel came a musical development of the band. On the third album World of Glass , the voice of Stene was placed more in the foreground. In addition, choirs and elements of classical music were increasingly used.

On Ashes , released in 2005 and produced by Borge Finstad ( Mayhem ) , the sound was made less epic. The choirs and elements of classical music were reduced and the band moved more in the direction of Death Metal with a few songs. At the beginning of 2006 Kjetil Ingebrethsen got out of the band without any conflict. As a replacement, Vorph (singer of Samael ) sang as a guest singer on Illumination , which appeared in January 2007.

In February 2007 Vibeke Stene left the band for personal reasons. Her successor in October 2007 was Mariangela "Mary" Demurtas, a trained linguist from Sardinia . In February 2009 the band separated from bassist Rune Osterhus, because he could no longer find the time required for Tristania. He was replaced by Ole Vistnes, who previously helped out with the band. Since the same year Gyri Losnegaard has been playing guitar with Tristania, who was previously a member of the Norwegian dark rock band Octavia Sperati as a replacement for Svein Terje Solvang, who left the group in 2008. On August 25, 2010, the sixth studio album Rubicon was released . It received good reviews in various metal magazines.
