Sirenia is a symphonic metal band from Norway .

history

Guitarist and songwriter Morten Veland at Norway Rock Festival 2009

When songwriter Morten Veland left Tristania because his ideas no longer met with approval, he founded Sirenia in 2001 .

Former singer Ailyn at the 2010 Global East Rock Festival

On November 5, 2007, the band announced that Monika Pedersen would no longer be a singer. As a replacement, the Spanish singer Ailyn was introduced on April 9, 2008 . The guitarist Bjørnar Landa was replaced on May 20, 2008 by Michael S. Krumins.

In 2010 Morten Veland released an album with his solo project Mortemia , in which he plays and sings all instruments.

After some gigs by Sirenia without Ailyn in June 2016, the band announced on July 5, 2016 the separation from the singer "for personal reasons".

In September 2016, the French mezzo-soprano Emmanuelle Zoldan was introduced as the band's new singer.

style

Their music is a combination of Gothic Metal and Symphonic Metal , with elements from Classical and Death Metal . Band founder Veland plays almost all the instruments himself and also contributes the lyrics.

The music is often characterized by a melancholy atmosphere, which is marked by deep growls in combination with female singing. The lyrics deal with suffering, death and human abysses.

While the first two albums with their choir passages and the melody-leading violin are stylistically comparable to Tristania's Beyond the Veil , the album Nine Destinies and a Downfall differs from its two predecessors. The focus here is on female singing. The songs are structured according to verse-refrain schemes; the metal elements were withdrawn.

Due to its style and the fact that the album was also released as a limited edition for commercial reasons, it represents a departure from the classic style of Veland towards more simply structured, mainstream-oriented symphonic metal , which caused negative reactions from some reviewers. However, the album Perils of the Deep Blue , which was released in June 2013, received positive reviews for its harsher sound, musical variety and Ailyn's better developed singing voice.
