Gorgoroth is one of the most famous Norwegian black metal bands. It was founded in Bergen in 1992 . The name of the band refers to JRR Tolkien's book The Lord of the Rings and describes a dark wasteland in the land of Mordor; it comes from the Elvish language Sindarin and means ' valley of horrors ', although it is a plateau.

history

Foundation and first publications (1992–1995)

After its founding in 1992, the band started, founded the guitarist Infernus, including cover versions of Celtic Frost to play. Then the band recorded the demos A Sorcery Written in Blood (1993) and Promo '94 (1994). Singer Hat (Norwegian for 'hate') and drummer Goat Pervertor also belonged to the band at that time. The label Embassy Records then signed the band, which, after bassist Kjettar had to serve a prison sentence for church arson, recorded their debut album Pentagram with the help of guest bassist Samoth from Emperor that same year . The album is seen as the cornerstone of the second Norwegian generation of black metal.

Gorgoroth with Pest as a singer (1995–1997)

Shortly after the album was released, Goat Pervertor and Hat left the band, who were replaced by Pest and Frost , Satyricon's drummer . With this line-up, the EP The Last Tormentor and shortly thereafter the Euronymous dedicated album Antichrist were recorded and released via Malicious Records.

The following year, the band released their third album, Under the Sign of Hell , now with Ares on bass and Grim on drums, which attracted the interest of the German label Nuclear Blast . Shortly thereafter, the band signed a new record deal and changed line-up, as both Pest and Grim left the band; Pest previously worked on four tracks for the upcoming album Destroyer, Or How to Philosophize With a Hammer . Gaahl von Trelldom joined as the new singer .

King ov Hell

In 1998 the album Destroyer, Or How to Philosophize With a Hammer was released. Just in time for the recordings, T-Reaper from Malignant Eternal joined them as interim bassist, but was replaced a year later by bassist King ov Hell . In the same year, drummer Kvitrafn also joined the band. Incipit Satan (2000) was recorded in the new line-up ; This album showed a stylistic change in the band.

When guitarist Tormentor left the band in 2002, the remaining members continued the band without a replacement and recorded the album Twilight of the Idols (In Conspiracy with Satan) , almost entirely composed by King Ov Hell and released in 2003. In 2004 Kvitrafn also left the band, which then acted as a trio, supported live by guest musicians.

Controversial concert in Krakow (2004)

On February 1, 2004, Gorgoroth played a concert in Krakow , Poland , which in retrospect attracted a lot of media attention and sparked controversial discussions. The reason for this was the conception of the concert, which was designed to provoke. On the one hand the blasphemous texts caused a sensation, on the other hand the stage decoration consisting of impaled sheep's heads and four crosses with two naked, masked men and two also naked women. A DVD release of this concert under the title Black Mass Krakow 2004 was announced in early 2008, the DVD was released on June 18, 2008 via Soulfood Music.

After quarrels with the Norwegian judiciary and two tours with the up-and-coming band 1349 , Ad majorem Sathanas gloriam was published in 2006 , which again showed stylistic changes. In the same year King Ov Hell left the band due to ideological differences, but returned in 2007 under the new pseudonym "KING!" Infernus also founded the Forces of Satan Records label, which is mainly intended to support younger and lesser-known bands.

Split up of the band and dispute over the band name

On October 22, 2007, Gorgoroth announced on the band's homepage and on MySpace that Gaahl and King had separated from Infernus. They accused him of not participating in the band anymore. The European tour planned for November will be carried out with a replacement for Infernus. Infernus announced that it would take Gaahl and King to court over the unresolved naming rights that both parties claimed for themselves. He also noted that he was not only entitled to the naming rights, but that Gaahl had considered leaving the band several times, and King had left the band in the meantime.

From November 8th, King and Gaahl went on a European tour as Gorgoroth and were supported by guest musicians Teloch ( 1349 ), Sykelig and Nick Barker ( Testament , Benediction ). In addition to Teloch, Arve Isdal from Enslaved and Jan Axel Blomberg from Mayhem and Dimmu Borgir were also recruited. Infernus, however, announced that it would record a new Gorgoroth album called Quantos possunt ad Satanitatem trahunt with its own line- up, for which he began to write new material in October 2006. The title is based on Adam von Bremen's chronicle of the Archdiocese of Hamburg , Gesta Hammaburgensis ecclesiae pontificum , where it says: “quantos possunt ad christianitatem trahunt” ; in Gorgoroth, however , christianitatem was replaced by satanitatem .

After the Norwegian patent office granted Gaahl and King the rights to the name Gorgoroth in December 2007 (they had previously registered the name without Infernus' knowledge), the band ended their collaboration with Regain Records. The label previously published a statement to want to continue Gorgoroth with Infernus. The sale of the live album True Norwegian Black Metal - Live in Grieghallen , released by the label after the split, had to be discontinued after a further court case.

Singer Gaahl came out as homosexual in 2008 . An interview related to his outing in the German metal magazine Rock Hard in November of the same year attracted international attention. A tour of Germany in support of Cradle of Filth followed in the same month. In the meantime, Infernus completed his Gorgoroth line-up. Both bands intended to present a new album in spring 2009. At the end of January 2009, a process took place between Infernus and King Ov Hell, which should finally decide on the rights to the band name.

Kings and Gaahls new ways

On March 10, 2009, King and Gaahl announced on their MySpace page that they had lost the rights to the band name and logo to Infernus. The registration of the name was invalidated and the dispute set a precedent in Norway. King and Gaahl were looking for a new band name under which they wanted to continue making music together. The planned album, which was supposed to be released as a Gorgoroth CD, should now be released under the new name God Seed. In the summer of 2009, however, Gaahl got out again. According to his own statements, his heart is "no longer one hundred percent in the matter". The future of God Seed was therefore unclear. Gaahl, who is also the singer of the Wardruna project of former Gorgoroth drummer Einar "Kvitrafn" Selvik, retired from metal. However, God Seed has not been dissolved, but is "only on hold as long as Gaahl does not feel like it." King founded a project called Ov Hell with Shagrath by Dimmu Borgir, whose debut album The Underworld Regime was released in 2010. Some of the debut music, which featured Teloch, Arve Isdal and Frost, was originally written for Gorgoroth and God Seed with Gaahl's voice in mind. Gaahl worked on the Skitliv album Skandinavisk misantropi , on which he appeared as a guest singer on the song Hollow Devotion . In 2012 the first God Seed Live album was released, a debut album was announced and the first material was uploaded.

Infernus' Gorgoroth (2009 - present)

Infernus continued Gorgoroth with Bøddel (Frank Watkins from Obituary ), Tomas Asklund (Ex- Dissection ) and the former Gorgoroth members Tormentor and Pest, with whom he recorded Quantos possunt ad Satanitatem trahunt in Asklund's Monolith Studio in 2009 .

In Rosas Höllenfahrt , a documentary by the homosexual filmmaker Rosa von Praunheim , which deals with the concepts of different religions and groups of hell , excerpts from performances by Gorgoroth and an interview with Gaahl and other band members appear. One utterance by Gaahl leaves no resolution missing: “All traces of Christianity should be removed” .

In 2011 Under the Sign of Hell was released in 2011 , a re-recording of the 1997 album, which caused controversy among the band's supporters due to the popularity of the original.

In 2012 Pest was released from the band after announcing two weeks before the start of the upcoming tour through Latin America that he would not give priority to it. Infernus decided to start the tour anyway, with Hoest von Taake taking over the vocals. The Serb Atterigner from the band Triumfall will sing on the upcoming album.

Music and lyrics

Gorgoroth plays classic Black Metal without keyboards with dominating blast beats and at high speed. Earlier releases were more melodic, but newer albums have a touch of industrial metal . The religious scholar Hugh Urban describes it as "extremely fast, dissonant and distorted music".

The lyrics will not be printed in the booklet, on the band's website or otherwise officially published. Pages that publish these or tabs have been asked to remove this content. Founder Infernus confesses to Satanism , whereas the former bassist King made contradicting statements and Gaahl describes himself as a Nordic shaman . This puts Gorgoroth in the front line of numerous black metal bands vying to outdo each other in their use of violent, demonic and aggressively anti-Christian themes.

Violations of the law by band members

Numerous Gorgoroth members have been sentenced to prison terms during their time in the band, including the temporary bassists Kjettar and Samoth for setting up church arson. Singer Gaahl was convicted of assault in 2001 and 2004, but both pleaded for self-defense. His offenses found considerable media coverage and were linked to the satanic attitudes of the band members. Gaahl rejects this view, however, and defines himself not as a satanist, but as a Nordic shaman. Infernus was on trial in 2006 for kidnapping, collective rape and illegal gun possession. Since he was not involved in the violent crimes, he was sentenced to a fine only for the unregistered weapons.
