Tom Cato Visnes (born November 7, 1974 ), also known under the pseudonyms King ov Hell , King or TC King , is a Norwegian bass player . He is a member of the bands Sahg , I , God Seed and Ov Hell and previously played with Gorgoroth , Audrey Horne and Jotunspor . Until 2008 he also worked as a teacher .

Career

Gorgoroth and God Seed

Visnes joined the black metal band Gorgoroth in 1999 and released three albums with the band. For the 2006 album Ad majorem Sathanas gloriam he wrote the complete music. The album was nominated for the Spellemann Prize in the Metal category. After the album was released, Visnes left the band because he had some problems with the ideology of Gorgoroth. A short time later he returned. In autumn 2007 he tried to throw out the Gorgoroth guitarist and founder Infernus (civil: Roger Tiegs) together with singer Gaahl (civil: Kristian Eivind Espedal); there was a lawsuit over the naming rights of the band. In 2009 a Norwegian court ruled against King and Gaahl in Infernus' favor.

Visnes and Gaahl then formed the band God Seed. Visnes released a planned studio album together with Dimmu Borgir singer Shagrath (real name: Stian Tomt Thoresen) under the title The Underworld Regime after Gaahl withdrew from the metal scene in 2009. In 2011, a God Seed Live album with recordings from the time Visnes and Gaahl Gorgoroth continued without Infernus was announced.

Other Projects

In autumn 2002 Visnes founded the band Audrey Horne with Enslaved guitarist Arve Isdal and Thomas Tofthagen, with whom Visnes shared an apartment at the time. The debut album No Hay Banda , released in 2005, was awarded the Spellemann Prize. Visnes left the band in 2007, however. Also in 2006 the first album of the hard rock band Sahg was released, which Visnes founded in 2004 with the Manngard singer Olav Iversen and the guitarist Thomas Tofthagen. Sahg has released three studio albums so far.

In 2006 Visnes released the album Gleipnirs smeder together with the former Gorgoroth drummer Kvitrafn under the name Jotunspor . On this album Visnes can also be heard as guitarist and singer . In the same year, the album Between Two Worlds by Band I was released, which includes the Immortal singer Abbath (bourgeois Olve Eikemo) and Enslaved guitarist Arve Isdal.

In addition, Visnes belongs to the band Temple of the Black Moon. Under this name he has been working with the anthrax guitarist Rob Caggiano since 2005 . Other members of the band are Dani Filth ( Cradle of Filth ), Arve Isdal and John Tempesta ( The Cult ).

Ideology and relationship to the metal scene

According to Gaahl, he and King are friends with Martin Eric Ain and Thomas Gabriel Fischer from the influential extreme metal band Celtic Frost . Shagrath, Dani Filth and Rob Caggiano from Anthrax also belong to King's circle.

Since he became a member of Gorgoroth and became better known in the black metal scene, he also has numerous opponents. Gorgoroth guitarist Tormentor left the band in 2002 because he could no longer work with King. Singer Pest said in a 2010 studio report for Sheol Magazine that since he quit in 1997 he has sometimes wondered what it would be like to be back with Gorgoroth, but made it clear that he probably wouldn't have wanted to work with King. Fenriz of Darkthrone has repeatedly expressed his contempt for King, he of the "About as a poser ," the "are constantly trying to destroy the REAL Metal", and stated that he would not look Darkthrone Black Metal, "if the what King ov Hell does is what anyone would call Black Metal. Let's just say we got rid of the boat before all the dead meat sank it. Again. We're playing our heavy metal - speed - punk now . ”Fenriz also accused him of taking months off sick leave while recording music and touring, making money from both Fenriz 'and Norway. Darkthrone's 2010 album Circle the Wagons was numbered "ANTI-KING OV HELL 001". After interviewing Zebub King for Black Metal: A Documentary , Bill commented :

“[T] here were some characters who bore facades, like King from Gorgoroth. Again, my intention was to be a silent observer, as a documentary film maker, and my hope was that people would be able to detect the character flaws. I regret that now, ha ha - it would have been interesting to see how tough that guy was after getting bitch-slapped. After the interview was done, King made all kinds of silly demands, but they were out of fear that footage of him smiling would be used. King claimed to be part of the black metal scene and to be friends with some of the old schoolers, but when I talked to the old schoolers they did not have nice things to say about King, and he most quite often referred as a 'newcomer . ' Just smells like 'pose' to me. You really have to give me credit for biting my tongue in that one. "

- Bill Zebub

King's claim to be a Satanist was contested by David "Blackmoon" Parland (ex- Necrophobic , ex- Dark Funeral ), who supported Gorgoroth founder Infernus in the dispute over naming rights; he doesn't know Gaahl and King, but it is obvious that there is nothing satanic about them. In an interview regarding his new band Ov Hell with the Norwegian newspaper Bergensavisen in February 2010, King himself stated that he was not a Satanist, despite allegations made both before and after; Instead, the band take “seriously what is dark in nature and the human mind”, and “the music, the images, the lyrics - all of this is part of an artistic expression. Many find it provocative and terrifying, yes, but for us it's just parables. ”The church is more satanistic than Ov Hell, since Satan is important to them and not to the band.

At a Sahg concert in the garage in Bergen in September 2010, a spectator threw eggs at King, which Fenriz happily described a few months later as the “ spinal tap moment of the year”. Fenriz concluded: "King ov Hell IS apparently Spinal Tap".
