Pure Heavy is the fifth studio album by the Norwegian hard rock band Audrey Horne . It was released in Norway on September 19, 2014 and in the rest of Europe on September 26 and 29, 2014 via Napalm Records .
Emergence
The musicians began working on new material as early as autumn 2013. At the suggestion of the singer Torkjell Rød , the new songs were written and rehearsed together, because in his opinion the “band feeling was lost” due to the separate working methods on the previous album Youngblood . The musicians were productive during the preparatory work, so that they have already come up with ideas for another album. The melancholy that was still strong on the older albums has largely disappeared on Pure Heavy , which, according to Torkjell Rød, has to do with the fact that the musicians have become older and more relaxed.
This process was interrupted by a co-headlining tour through Europe together with Grand Magus . Subsequently, on April 24, 2014, the recording began in the Duper Studios in Bergen . By May 1, 2014 the musicians had recorded 13 songs and singer Torkjell Rød recorded the vocals for seven songs. The band then moved to the Solslottet studio, also located in Bergen, to record the rest of the vocals and some overdubs . For the song Tales from the Crypt , the band wanted to hire the singer Joan Jett as a guest singer. The management of the band should get in touch with her, but that came to nothing.
In contrast to the previous album, Pure Heavy was not recorded live. According to singer Torkjell Rød, the band wanted to achieve a “more colorful sound” and not, as on the previous album Youngblood, show how the band sounds live. For the first time Audrey Horne produced with two producers . The choice fell on Ivar Sandøy, who mixed the previous album Youngblood , and Jørgen Træen, who mastered Youngblood . According to Torkjell Rød, Sandøy and Træen suggested that we produce the album together. Due to the good cooperation, none of the musicians was in the studio when Jørgen Træen mixed Pure Heavy .
publication
The limited version of the album contains two bonus tracks with Let Live and Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea . Napalm Records also released a limited edition of 300 copies Mailorder Edition - Box Set . The box contains the album in a digipak with two bonus tracks, an Audrey Horne card game with 56 cards, an Audrey Horne scent tree , five buttons and an autograph card .
The split - 7 ″ single Out of the City was released on August 15, 2014 . Background for the joint release with the German band Zodiac , which coincidentally both bands wrote a song called Out of the City on their albums Pure Heavy and Sonic Child , which were released around the same time . A music video was shot for the song . The singer of the Swedish band Amon Amarth Johan Hegg and his wife performed as guests . Audrey Horne's band members can be seen in the video as hand puppets . The album title Pure Heavy was suggested by bassist Espen Lien . At first, his bandmates thought the title was a joke before the musicians changed their mind. In an interview, singer Torkjell Rød stated that the title also reflects the good time the band had in the studio.
Out of the City is based on a bass line written by bassist Espen Lien, which in his opinion initially sounded like Southern Rock . According to Torkjell Rød, Lien's basic idea was worked on in the direction of Classic Rock after the guitarists Arve Isdal and Thomas Tofthagen had worked on it. In an interview with the German magazine Metal Hammer , Rød said that the guitarists had the song "Lizzyfiziert". He was referring to the Irish band Thin Lizzy .
Tales from the Crypt is heavily influenced by the glam rock and hair metal of the 1980s. Lyrically, bands like Van Halen , Mötley Crüe and Kiss are referenced.
“It's a tribute to the power of rock 'n' roll and what it meant to you in the past. That general feeling of playing in a rock band or listening to rock. When you start a band you always want to be as cool as your idols. "
Wolf in My Heart is about the restlessness of a musician who comes home from a tour and first has to find his way in normal life. According to Rød, the song title is a metaphor for this phenomenon.

Reviews
For Peter Mildner from the online magazine Metal.de , Pure Heavy would "run open doors to all fans who loved Youngblood " and also praised the guitar work by Arve Isdal and Thomas Tofthagen. However, he also criticized the fact that “more could have been gotten out of the Diamond acoustic piece ”. Mildner rated the album eight out of ten points. For Peter Kubaschk from the online magazine Powermetal.de , the album “simply makes you want to” and contains “outrageous catchy tunes to which he can't help but sing along loudly”. Although he criticized that the self-titled album from 2010 "had more depth", Kubaschk still rated Pure Heavy with 8.5 out of ten points.
Tim Serwatka from the online magazine Bloodchamber.de was critical . In his opinion, the only reason there is no bad song on the album is because "well-functioning Thin Lizzy guitar leads and solos save the songs from triviality". While the previous album “knew how to convince with a whole battery of irresistible hits”, Pure Heavy rocks “only to please”, for which Serwatka awarded six out of ten points. On the other hand, for David Nagel from The-Pit.de Youngblood was “a little bit stronger”, but Pure Heavy is still “a very good record”, where the “excellent compositions and the great technical and musical skills of the protagonists stand out “Would. He gave 8.5 out of ten points.
Chart placements
Pure Heavy reached number 16 in the Norwegian and number 90 in the German album charts . This placed the album worse than the previous album Youngblood , which reached number 10 and 66 respectively.
