Le Fol ( French for The Joker ) is the second studio album by the Norwegian hard rock band Audrey Horne . It was first released in the summer of 2007 in Norway and then on March 22nd, 2008 in the rest of the world via indie recordings .

Emergence

The album was created in a chaotic time for the band. Both bassist Tom Cato Visnes and keyboardist Herbrand Larsen left the group during the songwriting. At the same time Audrey Horne lost her contract with Tuba Records . The four of them continued to write on the material. A total of twenty songs were written during this time. Since the producer of the debut album No Hay Banda Joe Barresi was not available, the group decided to record the album themselves.

The recordings took place in the Earshot Studios in Bergen . The album was produced by guitarist Arve Isdal , who also played the bass. Herbrand Larsen, who played the organ , mellotron and keyboards, and Olav Iversen, who contributed background vocals, performed as guest musicians . Herbrand Larsen did the mixing of the album. Mastered was Le Fol Håkan Åkesson. A music video was shot for the song "Threshold" . Directed by Alex Herron.

The album title Le Fol refers to the tarot card of the same name . In an interview, singer Torkjell Rød stated that the Joker is a naive, optimistic person who interferes everywhere without thinking about the consequences.

“In the picture you can see a divorced man with scars and blood on his hands, which obviously stems from a failed relationship and he is passing the tarot card" Le Fol "on to a newly married man. This is meant to be a warning: "Be careful, this could happen to you as well". I like the dark note in the picture and that goes perfectly with the text. "

The lyrics are about love , viewed from a dark point of view. Guitarist Isdal says it's all about broken relationships, alcohol abuse, fights, drugs and anger. Singer Rød got the inspiration for this from his main job as a tattoo artist .

In the song Last Call , Rød criticized the Gothic and Emo scene that was taken over by profiteering. Wish You Hell is about class reunions . In an interview, Rød explained that at a class reunion he had met many people whom he actually didn't want to see again. In So Long, Euphoria is going about an exploiting Dende end relationship in which neither partner had the courage to address that separation would be better for both.

The album received good to very good reviews from the trade press. Rock-Hard editor -in- chief Götz Kühnemund described Le Fol as a “surprise hit” and attested to the band that they “write good, compact and catchy rock songs that are too classy to be ignored”. Kühnemund awarded 8.5 out of ten points. According to the reviewer Dario from the online magazine allschools.de , Audrey Horne managed “almost without failures to write only hits that are a lot of fun and add interesting new aspects to an actually oversaturated genre”. Dario rated the album with eight points. Nils Herzog from the online magazine musikreviews.de made a negative statement . Herzog criticized the fact that too much emphasis was placed on effects and alienation in the singing and that the album was cemented with too much unimportant filling material. He gave the album eight out of 15 points.

Le Fol debuted at number 22 on the Norwegian album charts. By the time their third, self-titled studio album was released , the album had sold over 10,000 times in Norway. Le Fol was nominated for the Spellemann Prize in the Metal category. However, the award went to black metal band Mayhem for their album Ordo Ad Chao . Also for the Alarmprisen was Le Fol nominated. However, Dimmu Borgir received an award for the album In Sorte Diaboli .
