Sorte Diaboli ( lat . For 'On behalf of the devil') is the seventh album by the Norwegian metal band Dimmu Borgir . The album was released in Europe on April 27, 2007 via Nuclear Blast . In the United States , the album was released on April 24th.

concept

In Sorte Diaboli is the band's first concept album . The story takes place in medieval Europe. The protagonist of the story is the assistant of a priest who first doubts his faith and then turns to the dark side and becomes an antichrist . The story is told in the form of a diary . The idea came up to start each song title with the article The .

Emergence

The guitarist Silenoz already collected the first ideas for the concept album during the Ozzfest tour 2004. The album was recorded between October and December 2006 in Studio Fredman. Was produced In Sorte Diaboli by Frederik Nordström Patrik J. Sten and the band itself.

Showing up on the internet

As early as March 6, 2007, the album appeared in relevant Internet exchange sites . The press was sampled with individual downloads instead of promo CDs. The files have been digitally watermarked . In this context, the Italian journalist Luca Pessina, who writes for the online magazine Metallitalia and the Italian Metal Hammer , was suspected of having distributed the files. In the meantime, however, there is a statement from Nuclear Blast, which says that Pessina cannot be held responsible.

reaction

Sorte Diaboli rose to number 1 in the Norwegian album charts and number 7 in Germany. In the USA, the album reached number 43. In the first week, the album sold around 14,000 times.

In the UK, the album was not approved for inclusion in the regular album charts because the album was accompanied by a participation certificate for a competition, which is against the requirements of the Charts Company .

Versions

The regular CD contains the nine tracks listed below.

The limited European digipak version contains the song The Ancestral Fever in fourth place. There is also a limited digipak version with a bonus DVD . This version contains a 32-page booklet in which the texts are printed in mirror writing. A mirror is included with the booklet . The DVD contains the video clip for The Serpentine Offering , a "making-of" documentation of the video clip and the album, a photo gallery and a media player.

The limited US digipak version contains the song The Heretic Hammer in sixth position. The album comes in a cardboard slipcase as the original artwork was rejected by some retail chains.

The Japanese digipak version includes a cover version of the song Black Metal by the British band Venom as a bonus .

Exclusively in the Nuclear Blast online shop there is a version in book form with a leather booklet. In addition, the CD receives both the European and the US bonus title. This version is limited to 2,000 pieces worldwide.

The vinyl version appears as a gatefold LP, which is accompanied by a bonus single which also contains both bonus tracks.

The first single was the song The Serpentine Offering . A video clip was shot for the song, directed by Patric Ullaeus .

The North American version contains the instrumental version of The Heretic Hammer instead of The Serpentine Offering .

Next we see a group of Christian crusaders raiding a village and slaughtering innocent people. The novice of a priest (the main character of the story) appears. Disgusted by the fact that people are being killed for their beliefs, he leaves the village for the forest. There he tears his cross off his neck and throws it away. He symbolizes his turning away from Christianity. Later he finds like-minded people in a cave and experiences a change in his eyes, which are now shaped like snakes. At the end of the video, the group attacks the crusaders and wins the battle.
