history

Foundation and No Hay Banda (2002 to 2006)

Singer Torkjell Rød

Audrey Horne was founded in the fall of 2002 as a pure fun project. The guitarists Arve Isdal (including Enslaved , I ) and Thomas Tofthagen ( Sahg ) as well as the bassist Tom Cato Visnes (including Gorgoroth , I, Ov Hell ) jammed in the shared apartment of Tofthagen and Visnes and quickly realized that all musicians were one had a musical background. The line-up was supplemented by the drummer Kjetil Greve ( Deride ) and the singer Torkjell Rød . Enslaved guitarist Ivar Bjørnson helped out on the keyboards at the first concerts. Since Bjørnson wanted to concentrate on his main band, Herbrand Larsen started as a permanent keyboardist. The band name was suggested by Arve Isdal.

“When I was younger, I was really into the Lynch movies, and I loved the character of Audrey Horne in particular. She was incredibly beautiful and sexy, but also very dark and mysterious. When we discussed what name to give our band, we thought of a name that is different and not a typical rock name. So I suggested AUDREY HORNE and the others thought the idea was good. After all, our music is beautiful, sexy, dark and mysterious, so the name fits perfectly. "

- Arve Isdal

After a few concerts, the band received a contract offer from Tuba Records. In early 2005, the EP Confessions & Alcohol was released , followed by the debut album No Hay Banda ( Spanish for There is no band ). The album was co-produced and mixed by American producer Joe Barresi (including Queens of the Stone Age ) . The EP reached number 16 on the Norwegian singles chart, while the album reached number 32 on the Norwegian album charts. Audrey Horne were awarded the prize in the Metal category at the Spellemann Prizes and received a nomination in the Best Newcomer category .

Le Fol and Audrey Horne (2007 to 2010)

Guitarist Arve Isdal

Before the band began recording their second studio album, Audrey Horne went through chaotic times. For one thing, Larsen and Visnes got out. At the same time, the band lost their contract with Tuba Records and then switched to Indie Recordings. The second studio album Le Fol ( French for The Joker ) was released in August 2007 and reached number 22 on the Norwegian album charts. Le Fol was nominated for the Spellemann Prize and the Alarm Prize in the Metal category. However, the prizes went to Mayhem for her album Ordo Ad Chao and Dimmu Borgir for her album In Sorte Diaboli . Le Fol has sold over 10,000 times in Norway . After two tours through Norway, Audrey Horne went on their first European tour in autumn 2008 as the opening act for Enslaved.

In the summer of 2009 the band played isolated concerts and appeared at various European festivals such as the Rock Hard Festival . On June 8th, 2009 Audrey Horne appeared as opening act for Mötley Crüe at their concert in Bergen. In September 2009 the band traveled to Pasadena to record their third studio album, directed by Joe Barresi. The work simply titled Audrey Horne was released on March 26, 2010 and reached number 13 on the Norwegian album charts. Bass player Espen Lien

For the fall of 2012, a European tour was planned in the opening act of Kill Devil Hill , but it was canceled. Instead, Audrey Horne recorded their fourth studio album under the direction of Even Johansen. Bassist Espen Lien , who has been a live musician with Audrey Horne since 2009 , was promoted to full member of the band. In November 2012 the band signed a contract with the Austrian record company Napalm Records, which released the album Youngblood on February 1, 2013 . Youngblood was named album of the month by the German magazine Metal Hammer and entered the Norwegian album charts at number ten and number 55 in the German album charts. In March 2013 the band played a tour of Germany as a support act for Long Distance Calling . After several festival appearances in the summer, including at the Rock Hard Festival, the Rockharz Open Air , the Hellfest , the Sweden Rock Festival or the Masters of Rock in the Czech Republic , a co-headlining tour with Karma to Burn followed in autumn 2013 .

Youngblood were nominated for Best Album at the 2013 Metal Hammer Awards , but the award went to the band Amorphis for their album Circle . Another co-headlining tour in Europe followed in March 2014; this time with Grand Magus . Meanwhile the band was already working on new songs. In April 2014, the musicians began recording their fifth studio album. The album Pure Heavy was produced by Ivar Sandøy and Jørgen Træen and was released on September 19, 2014. It reached number 16 in the Norwegian and number 90 in the German album charts. On August 15, 2014, the split single Out of the City was released together with the German band Zodiac . In autumn 2014 Audrey Horne went on a European tour with the bands 77 and Pet the Preacher , before another European tour with Dead Lord and Dead City Ruins followed in autumn 2015 .

Blackout and Waiting for the Night (since 2016)

In 2016 the band only played a few concerts and performed at the Dynamo Metal Fest and again at the Hellfest. Arve Isdal was nominated for best guitarist in the God of Riffs category at the 2016 Metal Hammer Awards , but the award went to Phil Campbell of the band Motörhead . In March 2017, Audrey Horne played a tour of Germany in support of Danko Jones . In June 2017 the band began recording their sixth studio album, Blackout , which was released on January 12, 2018. The album was named album of the month in the German magazines Metal Hammer , Rock Hard and Deaf Forever and reached number 37 in the German and number 46 in the Swiss and 68 in the Austrian album charts. Parallel to the album release, the band brings in cooperation with the brewery 7 Fjell Bryggeri from Bønes the beer blackout on the market. It is a New England India Pale Ale .

After the album was released, Audrey Horne played a European tour with supporters Dead City Ruins and Magick Touch . style

Drummer Kjetil Greve

Although the musicians involved have previously played in black or Viking metal bands, Audrey Horne's music is more based on hard rock. According to guitarist Arve Isdal, the musicians themselves describe the style of their band as modern classic rock . Sometimes the music is also described as alternative rock or post-grunge . Guitarist Thomas Tofthagen explained in an interview that when the band was founded, the musicians wanted to play the music of their idols because the band members grew up with this music. Furthermore, the band wanted to convey the same feeling that the musicians had when they saw their favorite bands at concerts. On the first two studio albums No Hay Banda and Le Fol , the music of Audrey Horne was compared with that of bands such as Faith No More , Soundgarden or Alice in Chains , sometimes also with Rainbow , A Perfect Circle or Tool . Also, Kiss , Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath represent influences are for the band.

“Even though our music is heavily influenced by classic hard rock and heavy metal of the seventies and eighties, we were never interested in being a vintage / retro band. There are so many bands out there trying to look and sound like it was 1975 or 1985, and honestly I found that amusing for a while, but I get bored pretty quickly. "

- Torkjell Rød

On their self-titled third album, the music tended more towards classic rock of the 1970s and 1980s. The musicians had heard a lot of this type of music beforehand, which was reflected in the songs. The keyboards were partly replaced by the Hammond organ and the mellotron , but according to Torkjell Rød they play a role equal to the guitars. According to Arve Isdal, Herbrand Larsen competed with the rest of the musicians while recording Audrey Horne . Starting with Youngblood , Audrey Horne made their music simpler. According to Torkjell Rød, the band used to try to "drown" every part in sound and when something didn't work, additional instruments or harmonies were added. Nowadays the band would either rewrite such a song or not edit it any further.

The lyrics, written by singer Torkjell Rød, refer to life, human interaction, death, the ocean and love. He gets the inspiration for this from his main job as a tattoo artist . On the album Le Fol , the lyrics deal with the subject of love , broken relationships, anger, etc. Rød used numerous seafarers ' metaphors in the lyrics of the album, which he himself titled .
