God Seed is a black metal band from Bergen , Norway, founded in 2009 . The founders are the former Gorgoroth musicians Gaahl and King ov Hell , who had to leave the rest of the band in 2007 after a name dispute. Gaahl ended the project in the middle of 2009 after individual concerts, but revived it in 2012. The group released their debut album in October 2012.
history
2007–2009: establishment and premature end
God Seed has its roots in the Norwegian black metal band Gorgoroth and its name litigation , in which the musicians King ov Hell , Gaahl and Infernus were involved.
After Gaahl and King ov Hell were kicked out of the band as a result of the dispute, they formed the group God Seed in Bergen , Norway in early 2009 . Until the end of the name dispute in March 2009, Gaahl and King ov Hell used the name Gorgoroth . However, the court approved Infernus, so the two had to change the name. So they decided to rename the new project God Seed . The musicians wrote the first song material during the ongoing conflict with Infernus. God Seed signed with Indie Recordings and the debut album was initially set for late 2009, but the release date was postponed to early 2010. In order to be able to work on the album in the studio, the musicians canceled all tours. The work on the album was as good as finished, only the vocals still had to be recorded. However, the vocal recordings never took place.
"We have recorded everything in the studio and are just waiting for Gaahl to put on vocals on it. So we have only vocals and the final mix to go before it's all done. It's sometimes a nightmare to work with him in the studio because of the pride he puts into the smallest details. If he is not in the right mood or doesn't find the correct words we get nothing done. At times I've spent days in the studio counting seconds with nothing happening. It's the same way now, but I know in the end the result will be unique and powerful. We have to wait till Gaahl is done writing his lyrics to chose the title for the album. When the whole concept of this album is done lyrically we'll decide which title to use. "
The album was not released because the two musicians dropped the project. The reason they cited was a lack of interest in music in general and a lack of enthusiasm. Gaahl announced this in an interview he gave during the With Full Force . King ov Hell said that Gaahl had decided to completely retire as a musician. God Seed played at With Full Force and Hellfest in 2009 .
King ov Hell announced that they would set up the Ov Hell project with Shagrath from Dimmu Borgir to publish the written material about this project. Their debut album The Underworld Regime was released on February 8, 2010 via Indie Recordings and Prosthetic Records .
Gaahl started a career as an actor . First in the Norwegian State Theater , later as a film actor in the Norwegian medieval action film Escape - Legacy of the Vikings by Roar Uthaug, which was released in September 2012.
Since 2012: Regained creativity and debut album: I Begin
At the beginning of 2012, Gaahl decided to want to make music again and revived the group with King ov Hell. In January 2012, the first live album Live at Wacken was released , which contains a recording from Wacken Open Air 2008 - under the name Gorgoroth during the ongoing legal dispute.
While King ov Hell and Gaahl worked with session musicians at the beginning of the band, the two guitarists Stian "Sir" Kårstad and Lust Kilman, as well as drummer Kenneth Kapstad and keyboardist Geir Bratland joined the project when the band was founded . Gaahl acts as the singer while King ov Hell is active as the bass player for God Seed.
On October 23, 2012, the group released their debut album I Begin on Indie Recordings . The album was recorded in several recording studios in Bergen in August 2011.
On June 30th 2013 the group played on the Marquee I stage at the Graspop Metal Meeting in Belgium with Winterfylleth , Moonspell , Ghost , Epica and King Diamond .
In April and May 2014 the group toured together with Cult of Luna through Germany , Poland , the Czech Republic , Luxembourg , Austria , France , the United Kingdom , the Netherlands and Switzerland . In November and December of the previous year, God Seed and Rotting Christ could be seen in the opening act of Cradle of Filth in Europe .
style
It was often criticized in the online media that I Begin was a musical copy of the 2006 Gorgoroth album Ad Majorem Sathanas Gloriam . The rumor was based on the fact that this album was mainly written by King ov Hell. FO, critic of Stormbringer.at , writes in his review that God Seed's music goes from Norwegian Black Metal to the progressive - psychedelic of the 1970s. Slight influences from stoner and doom rock are also described.
Florian Dammasch writes that God Seed delivers almost monotonous industrial Black Metal and sometimes moves it on an electronic-ambient level. Björn Springorum describes the group's music as a mixture of Gorgoroth's Destroyer and the early The Kovenant . The production and use of keyboards by Geir Bratland give the sound an industrial touch. The pieces are mostly held in mid-tempo and through the additional use of clear vocals, Gaahl God Seed lends a shamanic aura. The texts are partly written in Norwegian . Götz Kühnemund ascribes parallels to God Seed's music with Gorgoroth , but without coming across as a copy of this band. The sound is described as atmospheric, melodic and powerful.
