Darkthrone Holy Darkthrone - Eight Norwegian Bands Paying Tribute is a tribute album to the Norwegian black metal band Darkthrone , on which their pieces are re-enacted by eight of the most famous bands from the Norwegian black metal scene of the 1990s. It was released by Moonfog Productions in 1998.

Track list

  1. Satyricon - Kathaarian Life Code
  2. Enslaved - Natassja in Eternal Sleep
  3. Thorns - The Pagan Winter
  4. Emperor - Cromlech
  5. Dødheimsgard - Green Cave Float
  6. Gehenna - Transilvanian hunger
  7. Gorgoroth - Slottet i det fjerne
  8. Immortal - To Walk the Infernal Fields

Cover

Just like Darkthrone's record cover from the 1990s, the compilation shows a black and white recording of a band member in nature, in this case Fenriz with corpse paint and grim expression in a kneeling pose. According to the label, the cover is "minimalist in the true spirit of Darkthrone".

style

With the exception of Cromlech and Green Cave Float , all titles come from the band's classic Black Metal phase. The bands essentially retain the structure of the original, but do not copy it, but adapt it to their respective style. Vocally, Thorns ' version of The Pagan Winter differs from the original in particular , as a vocoder is used and no screaming is used . While most of the titles are better produced than the originals, Gorgoroth's Slottet i det fjerne is accompanied by some background noise such as feedback.

Reviews

Both the idiosyncratic interpretations, especially those by The Pagan Winter , as well as more faithful pieces like Natassja in Eternal Sleep were recorded mixed. The Metal Observer described the tribute album as average because it did not respect the original spirit.

Some of them doing rather straight forward versions of Darkthrone classic´s with their own trademark, while others have been interpreting rather than covering. The cover is minimalistic in the true spirit of Darkthrone. Show your respect to the creators of the new wave of Unholy Black Metal! "
