Taake (from tåke , Norwegian 'Nebel') is a Norwegian extreme metal band. Singer Ørjan Stedjeberg, stage name "Hoest" (from høst , Norwegian "autumn"), is the only permanent member of the band.

Band history

The band, founded in 1993, was initially called Thule , before singer Hoest renamed it Taake in 1995. He hoped this name would reflect the spirit of the song lyrics, which were written in an old Norwegian dialect and stick rhyme form , and most importantly deal with the nature of Norway. At the same time, according to Hoest, the name is a tribute to the fog that always surrounds the mountains in his hometown of Bergen .

The band's second album, Over bjoergvin graater himmerik , caused a sensation due to the partial use of non-genre means (such as the jew's harp ) and a generally more progressive paint job . The band's third album, Hordaland doedskvad , featured guest appearances from other artists, such as Nattefrost and Nordavind from Carpathian Forest . After the album Hoest put the band on hold for a while and played in the black metal band Ragnarok , among others .

In September 2008 the recordings for the fourth album Taake ended , which was released at the end of the year.

In 2011 the album Noregs vaapen was released , on which Nocturno Culto from Darkthrone , Attila Csihar from Mayhem , Demonaz from Immortal , Bjørnar Nilsen from Vulture Industries, Lava from Amok and Skagg from Gaahlskagg appeared as guest musicians.

Music genre

Hoest tries to strike a balance between elements of Norwegian black metal , 1980s black thrash and Nordic folk with Taake . He also tries to bring in his own progressive ideas to give Taake his own identity without falling too far from the traditional black metal framework.

Texts and ideology

The concept album Nattestid ser porten vid is, as indicated in the title of the album, about the night and Over bjoergvin graater himmerik about death. The first three albums Nattestid ser porten vid , Over bjoergvin graater himmerik and Hordalands doedskvad , which were created during the same period, are therefore musically and lyrically similar and are linked through the themes of death, Norway and the devil in humans.

Hoest says he is “largely” interested in Ásatrú and feels “connected to the Nordic belief in gods [...]. Just as it is expressed in the Norwegian folk songs. ”However, he does not want to“ place himself in any ideological spectrum ”; he is only himself and “strives to make my views known to the world. I want to express myself through my music. ”However, he also stated that he did not believe in gods and that he was not religious.

Controversy

On March 20, 2007, Hoest performed at the Turock Club in Essen with a swastika painted on his chest , spat at and pelted the audience with glass bottles and smoldering cigarettes. The concert was played to the end. As a consequence, all festival appearances of the band in Germany were canceled by the organizers.

On the official website, Hoest commented on the events and asserted that Taake was not a band with National Socialist ideas, but based the concept of the band on provocation. However, he subsequently insulted the club owner as " subhuman ".

In a statement in Metal Hammer (December 2008 issue), Hoest asserted that he was in no way attached to right-wing extremist ideas. Hoest was quoted as saying: “There are bad misunderstandings about me and my band Taake, some of which are my own fault and which I want to clear up. [...] I did not expect such serious consequences and violent reactions. […] I have never had contact with the radical right-wing Black Metal scene or have even been interested in it. It wasn't until I was suddenly put in there that I became aware of the problem. I don't want anything to do with this scene. "

According to Taake, a gig at the Norwegian Karmøygeddon Festival in April 2008 was canceled because the Essen thrash metal band Kreator had put pressure on the organizer.

Hoest had to serve three prison terms for violent crimes, including in 2006 and 2007. The former guitarist C. Corax, who helped out on various albums, was also convicted in 2006.
