In the Nightside Eclipse is the first regular album by the Norwegian black metal band Emperor .

History of origin

The album was recorded in July 1993 in Eirik Hundvin's " Grieghallen " studio. With I Am the Black Wizards it contains one of the most famous Emperor titles, which was already heard on the EP Emperor . Several other songs were originally written with founding member Mortiis , who contributed the lyrics. He was replaced in 1993 by bassist Tchort. Beyond the Great Vast Forest is a newly recorded and heavily modified version of My Empire's Doom from the demo.

At the time of publication, Ihsahn was the only one of the band members at large. Drummer Faust was in jail for murdering a gay man in Lillehammer Olympic Park and for being involved in several arson attacks. Samoth was convicted of church arson and Tchort of assault and robbery. Due to the imprisonment and problems with the record company, the release of the album was delayed by a year after the recordings were finished. Faust's long sentence also ended his membership with Emperor. He was succeeded by Trym Torson.

The cover was drawn by Kristian "Necrolord" Wåhlin , who also designed the album covers for many other metal bands (e.g. Bathory , Lake of Tears , Dissection ).

The album was released in 1994 by Candlelight Records on CD and by Megarock as a Picture Disc , the following year by Modern Invasion Music and Century Black on CD and by Candlelight Records on LP.

In 1998 the album was re-released with the cover versions A Fine Day to Die ( Bathory ) and Gypsy ( Mercyful Fate ), the intro and Into the Infinity of Thoughts were combined into one title.

Music genre

The album was recorded by Eirik "Pytten" Hundvin in the raw sound typical of the time and thus contains the characteristic heaviness that most albums of the second black metal wave, such as De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas by Mayhem and A Blaze in the Northern Sky by Darkthrone . In contrast to the other albums of the second wave, the album contains more synthesizer and keyboard passages.

meaning

In the Nightside Eclipse is one of the most important albums of the second wave of Black Metal. Steve Huey described it in the All Music Guide as “the definitive Norwegian black metal album”.
