biography

Kristian Wåhlin was born in Gothenburg, Sweden in 1971. His interest in art developed during his time at the Schillerska Grammar School. Romantic and Renaissance painters such as Caspar David Friedrich , Albrecht Dürer and Hieronymus Bosch represented important early influences . His interest in these epochs also coincided with his studies in music.

At the age of 17 Wåhlin founded the band Grotesque , in which he played as a guitarist with his school friend Tomas Lindberg (vocals), Alf Svensson (guitar) and drummer Tomas Eriksson. After a breakup in 1990, a few members of At the Gates , the original drummer Johan "Shamaatae" Lahger, formed the one-man band Arckanum . Wåhlin worked with Lindberg and other members of At the Gates in the death metal band Liers in Wait , and he later designed the album Slaughter of the Soul by At the Gates.

The band Dissection , who had played together with At the Gates, came up with the idea of using Wåhlin's drawings as the cover of The Somberlain and Storm of the Light's Bane, among others . The latter shows the well-known scene of the riding grim reaper in a snowy landscape. He also drew the cover for the debut album by the Norwegian black metal band Emperor , In the Nightside Eclipse .

With the bands Liers in Wait and Decollation, Wåhlin recorded quite a bit of material until they broke up in the mid-90s. In 1995 he founded the gothic metal band Diabolique , for which he won some of his former musicians as additional band members. He recorded a number of albums with this band, but this band has been on hold since 2001. He also played with Tomas Lindberg on The Great Deceiver .
