Extol ( English worship ) is a Christian metal band from Oslo ( Norway ).

history

Extol was founded in 1993 by the students David Husvik (drums), Christer Espevoll (guitar) and his brother Peter (vocals). The first appearance took place in May 1994. In addition, Eystein Holm got on the bass. The line-up is completed with the second guitarist Emil Nikolaisen , who joined the band in 1995. In 1995 and 1996 the band recorded some songs, three of which were released on the compilation Northern Lights - Norwegian Metal Compilation . The first demo, Embraced , was released in 1997. The demo caught the attention of Metal Blade Records , but a record deal was never concluded. The band initially recorded their first album Burial on their own, but later released it on the Swedish independent label Endtime Productions . The album was released with artwork by Kristian Wåhlin and made the band known outside of Norway. It was later also released in the United States through Tooth & Nail Records .

In 1999 the band followed up with the EP Mesmerized . Among the six songs released through Solid State Records is a remix by Raison d'être and two by Sanctum . In 2000 the second album Undeceived was released , but with Tor Magne Glidje on bass. Another EP followed, after which the band switched to Century Media Records , where their 2003 album Synergy was released.

Then there were various line-up changes again. The following album The Blueprint Dives (2005) divides the fan base, who can only partially make friends with the new, somewhat more poppy style.

In August 2007 the band announced the interruption of their musical work on the blog of their official Myspace profile. It is still unclear whether and when the band will work together again.

In April 2013, the band announced the release of a new album. The album, entitled Extol , was released in June 2013.

style

Extol's music can be described as Progressive Death / Thrash Metal at the beginning , which also contained elements from Black Metal . Her complicated, technical style of playing was her trademark until her last album. Extol is partly reminiscent of the band Believer or Watchtower (especially on the album “Synergy”). Their music is vaguely reminiscent of a mixture of Death and Opeth . The music combines heaviness and melody, sometimes refined with violin and keyboard solos. The later albums were more oriented towards Thrash Metal, while towards the last album the band was more reminiscent of more progressive pop bands such as Radiohead or the alternative metal band Tool or Deftones . Instead of guttural singing, clear singing can be heard here for the first time.
