Deftones is a band from Sacramento ( California , USA ) that was formed in 1988. She is considered a co-founder of Nu Metal , but increasingly distanced herself from this genre in the course of her career.
Band history
Beginnings and first record deal (1988–1995)
In the late 1980s, Chino Moreno , Abe Cunningham and Stephen Carpenter met at school and spent time together skateboarding . They soon began to make music together in Carpenter's garage and finally founded the Deftones with the then bassist Dominic Garcia. When Abe Cunningham and Dominic Garcia played in another band, the Deftones took a little break. They were later replaced by drummer John Taylor and bassist Chi Cheng. After a while, John Taylor left the band and Abe Cunningham became the drummer again. With this line-up, the Deftones began in 1989 to bring their music to the public and to make a name for themselves in Sacramento and the surrounding area.
It was only after a few years of part-time jobs, many gigs (including with Korn ) and demo tapes, that Madonna got the Deftones a record deal with her label Maverick in 1995 . Although the Deftones had often received offers from smaller record companies, they had too great a claim on themselves for that.
Commercial breakthrough and White Pony (1995-2001)
In September 1995 their first album Adrenaline was released, which they had recorded in a very short time. There are also some tracks on it that they had performed live for years. At the time of publication it was not a resounding success, but thanks to constant promotion they were able to sell over 200,000 copies of their debut by 1997. With their second album Around the Fur (1997) they gained acclaim from a wider audience and critics, not least thanks to massive airplays of the singles My Own Summer (Shove It) and Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away) on MTV . It was then that the Deftones became a figurehead on the Nu-Metal scene .
Three years after Around the Fur , Deftones released her successor, White Pony . Compared to its predecessor, the album marks a clear break in style, which the band forced to distance themselves from the classification as a Nu-Metal band. Although the album was more experimental and dark, it is considered their most successful album to date. In 2001 the Deftones received a Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance for the song Elite . On White Pony there is a joint song ("Passenger") with Maynard James Keenan ( Tool , A Perfect Circle ). Frank Delgado has only been an official member since this album, but he had already worked in the background on both albums.
Internal tensions (2001-2007)
At this time the tensions between the band members intensified, especially between guitarist Carpenter and singer Moreno, who played guitar for the first time on White Pony . While the creative tensions, according to Moreno on White Pony, had a positive influence on the music, they increasingly became an obstacle during the creation process of the fourth album Deftones (2003), so that the release was greatly delayed. The recordings took 10 months, cost $ 2.5 million, and the band had to pay a fine of more than $ 1 million to the record company Maverick Records for the delayed delivery.
In October 2005, B-sides and Rarities was released. This recording includes cover versions of The Cure , Duran Duran , The Smiths , Jawbox and Lynyrd Skynyrd as well as collaborations with Jonah Matranga ( Far , Gratitude ) and B-Real from Cypress Hill .
On October 27, 2006, the new album Saturday Night Wrist was released . Guest musicians are Serj Tankian ( System of a Down ) and Annie Hardy (Giant Drag). The first single, "Hole in the Earth", was released on September 5, 2006. Internal tensions intensified in the run-up to this album. The band members rarely spoke to each other and recorded their respective parts separately. The fact that the Deftones visited a total of six different studios and two different producers were involved also contributed to the fact that Saturday Night Wrist had to be assembled from individual parts. When Moreno left the band in the midst of the formation process in 2005 to tour with Team Sleep , the exclusion of Moreno or the dissolution of the band were also considered. Despite all the difficulties in the run-up, Saturday Night Wrist was well received by the trade press.
Cheng's accident and continuation with Vega (2007-today)
On November 4, 2008, Chi Cheng was seriously injured in a car accident and has been in a coma since then . In May 2009, however, he was transferred from the intensive care unit and was independent of life support measures. At the time of the accident, the Deftones were working on an album tentatively titled Eros . After the accident, the band stopped songwriting for the time being. On February 5, 2009, the Deftones announced that Cheng would initially be represented by Sergio Vega (formerly Quicksand ), a friend of the band. He had already helped out in 1999 with Cheng's consent. The band decided to continue the band with Vega - he is now an integral part of the band - and began to write new material. The far advanced album Eros , however, was put on hold until further notice; since then there have been different declarations of intent regarding a possible completion.
On April 30, 2010 the sixth studio album Diamond Eyes was released , which was very successful. It reached number 8 in the album charts in Germany. A total of five songs were released as single ( Rocket Skates , Diamond Eyes , Sextape , You've Seen the Butcher and Beauty School ). An extended tour followed, which also stopped in many cities in Germany. In addition, festivals such as B. the Hurricane Festival and the Southside Festival .
After the tour, the band took a short break and the band members went to their side projects.
In July 2012, songs from the band's seventh studio album were played live for the first time ( Rosemary and Roller Derby , later renamed Poltergeist ). After the pre-release of the songs Leathers and Tempest in October, the album Koi No Yokan was released in November 2012 and was very well received by both American and German critics.
After the reports about Chi Cheng raised hopes of a full recovery after his slow awakening in 2012 after four years in a coma, Chi passed away on April 13, 2013 as a result of sudden heart failure.
After a renewed phase of work on side projects, the eighth studio album Gore was released on April 8, 2016 , which was classified in the top ten of the charts in several countries and exceeded the previous records of the albums White Pony and Deftones .
Side projects
The Deftones were also working on some side projects. Chino Moreno is involved in the Team Sleep project. He also founded the band ††† (Crosses) with his old friend and guitarist of the band Far, Shaun Lopez . The band has released two EPs and one album, and played a small tour along the west coast of the US and South America. He also plays with three former members of Isis in the band Palms . Since 2016 Moreno has also been part of the new super group Saudade with Dr. Know ( Bad Brains ), John Medeski ( Medeski, Martin & Wood ), Chuck Doom (Team Sleep, Crosses) and Macky Jayson ( Cro-Mags , Bad Brains). Abe Cunningham is part of the Phallucy project , Stephen Carpenter plays in Kush and Sol Invicto . Chi Cheng recorded CDs of her own poetry for good causes.
