Isis was an American post-metal band. It was founded in 1997 in Boston , Massachusetts and later based in Los Angeles , California . In June 2010 it dissolved after prior notice.

history

Isis was founded in 1997 by Aaron Turner, Jeff Caxide and Aaron Harris. After recording a first EP , The Mosquito Control ( produced by Converge guitarist Kurt Ballou ), she toured with Dillinger Escape Plan , Converge and EyeHateGod, among others . In 1998 Mike Gallagher and Jay Randall joined the band.

Randall left Isis a year later, after the recordings for the second EP The Red Sea , which in turn was produced by Kurt Ballou. Cliff Meyer took his place. A tour with Cave In followed .

With Celestial the first full album was released in 2000. For the first time the band worked with Matt Bayles , who also worked for The Blood Brothers , Pearl Jam and Mastodon . Bayles also produced the following Isis albums. Celestial also aroused the interest of Mike Patton , who then signed Isis for his label Ipecac Recordings .

In 2002, Isis released her second album Oceanic again on Mike Patton's label, whose philosophy is to offer unconventional artists of various genres a platform without interfering with their work. At least since Oceanic , Isis was known to a larger base in Europe. Here she toured several times, especially in 2003 as part of the Oceanic release, where she played shows with Aereogramme , Dälek and Jesu , among others . In 2005 she was also seen at the Roskilde Festival .

In October 2004 Isis released the album Panopticon , which was followed by months of touring and promotion. She brought the band Jesu, who were friends on tours together, to Germany and learned to appreciate the German band Bohren & the Club of Gore, which is part of the package , in the same way . For the song In Fiction , a video was shot with the help of Josh Graham, which, according to Aaron Turner, was never broadcast on commercial television.

In 2006, Isis was booked by Tool to support their big 10,000 Days tour and was known to an even larger audience. On September 26, 2006 Isis released her DVD Clearing the Eye , which contains various live recordings from 1999 to 2005, and a month later, on October 31, 2006, her album In The Absence Of Truth . The album and DVD were also released again via Ipecac and Southern, respectively.

In 2007 the next big tour through Europe followed, during which she could also be seen at the Southside and the Hurricane Festival . In April 2008, the band returned to Europe on tour and played at several festivals.

In addition to his musical creativity, singer Aaron Turner is the founder and owner of the Hydra Head Records label and responsible for the lyrical and visual concept behind the Isis releases. He has also done a lot of artwork for befriended bands such as B. Pelican or Converge . He is also involved in several side projects, for example Old Man Gloom , Lotus Eaters , Mamiffer and House of Low Culture . Bryant Clifford Meyer is also a founding member of the post-rock celebrity Red Sparowes and the band Windmills by the Ocean .

On May 18, 2010, the Isis members announced that they would split up after their last concert on their last tour on June 23, 2010; they would have done anything they wanted to do and said anything they wanted to say. Until then, the recordings of an already announced EP should be completed. Ultimately, in November 2012, a box set with specials was released on double CD and DVD called Temporal .

In the summer of 2018, the musicians announced a joint appearance under the name Celestial for a charity festival dedicated to Caleb Scofield, with Old Man Gloom and Pelican in October of the same year in Los Angeles.

style

Isis is often mentioned in the same breath as bands like Neurosis or Pelican because of their mix of styles. Her songs are rarely shorter than six minutes and mainly contain elements of Doom Metal , Postrock , Noiserock , Hardcore Punk and Ambient . Therefore, the band is classified in the genre of post-metal , in which it takes a pioneering role. At the beginning of her career she played a mixture of brutal hardcore and Doom-Metal borrowings and was considered one of many Neurosis copies. In the course of her development, however, she moved beyond the sludge genre that was attached to her, since from Oceanic she began to expand her music to include dynamic interplay from the post-rock area (e.g. Mogwai ), to make this a little more melodic and the To give songs more space to develop through a longer structure. The following album Panopticon continued the thread of this development. In addition, Turner began to sing cleanly instead of using growls as he had before . The songs are now drawn even stronger by the contrast, calm and loud.

The album In the Absence of Truth is noticeably influenced by Isis' USA tour as support for Tool in 2006. It is more technical and complex than the material previously released. The album marks a departure from the post-metal genre and opens the band's style to progressive alternative metal .
