Old Man Gloom is a post-metal band formed in 1999 .

history

Old Man Gloom was founded in 1999 in Santa Fee by singer and guitarist Aaron Turner von Isis together with drummer Santos Monata . The band's first releases appeared on Turner's independent label Tortuga Records , a sub-company of Hydra Head Records . The debut album Meditations in B was as a duo recorded and released in August 2000. Following the release clashed with Nate Newton of Converge and Caleb Scofield of Cave In two other popular musicians to Old Man Gloom what in Boston -based band the reputation of a supergroup of regional post-hardcore scene. As a further addition, Luke Scarola, who increasingly brought in the use of synthesizers , temporarily joined the band. Subsequently, the albums Seminar II: The Holy Rites of Primitivism Regressionism and Seminar III: Zozobra appeared at the same time . Other popular Boston musicians took part in the recording with Steve Brodsky from Cave In and Agnostronic Blunt from Agoraphobic Nosebleed . Seminar III: Zozobra only contains a 27-minute piece. After the release, the band made their first appearances, but these were rare. The first productive phase of the band ended with the EP Christmas Eve I + II and 6 , which was released in 2003 and contained a cover version of the Mr. Big hit To Be with You , and the album Christmas , which was released in 2004. Various guest musicians were repeatedly involved in both releases with Eugene Robinson from Oxbow and Kurt Ballou from Converge and again Agnostronic Blunt from Agoraphobic Nosebleed. After Christmas , No 2012 was released, Old Man Gloom's first album after eight years of rest. The reactivation of the band was often associated with the breakup of Isis and, despite a clear style difference, put it in competition with the debut of the group Palms founded by former Isis members Jeff Caxide, Aaron Harris and Bryant Clifford Meyer . With No , released via Hydra Head Records, the band entered a new productive phase. In 2014, two albums titled The Ape of God followed on Profound Lore Records and in 2016 the live album Mickey Rookey Live at London on Ektro Records . Various guest musicians also took part in No , with Kevin Baker from All Pigs Must Die , Mike McKenzie from The Red Chord and again Kurt Ballou. Luke Scarola no longer took part in the following tour. The band did not disclose any information about his departure.

Caleb Scofield died in a traffic accident in March 2018 at the age of 39. The remaining members called on their Facebook presence to support Scofield's family financially.

In December 2018, Old Man Gloom announced that Stephen Brodsky from Cave In will take over the job on bass as a new member and that work has already taken place on a new album.

style

The music played by Old Man Gloom is commonly attributed to post-metal. Old Man Gloom is mostly compared to the other bands of the participating musicians, Isis, Converge and Cave In. However, at the same time separated from these and named as "conceptual, experimental" and more independent in relation to these groups.
