Cave In is a rock band from Methuen , Massachusetts , USA .

Career

The band was founded in 1995 by friends Jay Frechette (vocals) and Stephen Brodsky (vocals, guitar), who lived in the immediate vicinity. Gradually, Justin Matthes (bass), Adam McGrath (guitar) and John-Robert Conners (drums) joined the band. The first rehearsals took place in the basement of Jay Frechette's parents' house.

In the spring of 1996 Cave In brought out the Cave In / Gambit Split 7 " together with the band Gambit , which was followed by further split releases with the bands Early Grace and Piebald. During one of their shows, Aaron Turner from the record label Hydra Head Records was at the same time Singer of the band Isis , took notice of Cave In and offered them to release their own promo CD on his label. In the summer of 1997 there was a Cave In titled 7 "and a short time later Beyond Hypothermia, a compilation of earlier split singles and demo recordings out. Around that time the line-up of the band was formed, with Caleb Scofield (bass, vocals) and - after the departure of Jay Frechette - Stephen Brodsky as the new lead singer, which has existed since then.

The band's first studio album , Until Your Heart Stops , with their roots in the independent metalcore scene , was followed by extensive tours, including with The Dillinger Escape Plan and Converge . With the album Jupiter , released in 2000 , Cave In continued the musical development that had already been indicated a year earlier with the EP Creative Eclipses . The move away from the original, harder sound and towards more melodic song structures and more experimental sounds of Prog-Rock and Space Rock opened up new fans for the band, but also alienated hardcore fans from the very beginning. Major labels became aware of Cave In and after another EP for Hydra Head Records, Tides of Tomorrow , they finally switched to RCA Records . With the album Antenna , which was received positively by many critics, the band first entered the US album charts in 2003. A music video was also created for the single "Anchor", directed by Dean Karr. Cave In toured the US with Lollapalooza and toured Europe with Foo Fighters and Muse . At the same time, however, the pressure on the band members, who were now confronted with the increased expectations of a major label, and their desire to return to harder material again. Therefore, in 2004, the label and band decided to go their separate ways again in the future. In 2005, Cave In, now back on Hydra Head Records, released a compilation of demos made in 2003 and 2004 under the title Perfect Pitch Black . The songs were based more on the earlier Cave In sound and at the same time reflected the experiences of those years, exemplified by the song "Trepanning".

From November 2006 the band officially took a break, the individual members then devoted themselves to various side and - in the case of Stephen Brodsky - solo projects. In the spring of 2009, Cave In announced their return with new material. In the meantime, John-Robert Conners, who had to take a break due to an injury after the appearance of Perfect Pitch Black and had been replaced by Converge drummer Ben Koller, was back in the band. In July 2009 Cave In returned with a reunion concert in Allston, Massachusetts and the EP Planets Of Old . Originally only available on vinyl, the CD version released in January 2010 also contained a bonus DVD with recordings of the July 19, 2009 concert. The new album White Silence was released in May 2011.

Caleb Scofield died in a traffic accident in March 2018 at the age of 39.
