House of Low Culture is an American drone-doom , ambient and noise formation founded in 2000 .
Constellation and concept
The only permanent member of the band is Aaron Turner (including ex- Isis and Mamiffer ), around whom there is an ensemble of constantly changing guest musicians. These include, among others, his wife Faith Coloccia (also Mamiffer) and Stephen O'Malley ( Sunn O))) ). The band is named after a song by Isis that was featured on the Sawblade EP .
According to Turner, the concept of House of Low Culture consists in breaking up musical clichés and counteracting established and elitist musical cultures. Although Turner prefers a structured way of working, many of the pieces of music are created through improvisation. Often a single sound triggers a whole song. Based on this sound, Turner develops a structural song structure in which he tries to specify individual parts of the pieces in length and tenor. The final sound, however, only becomes apparent during the creative phase.
