Crosses (usually stylized as ††† ) is a US-based electro-rock - band from Los Angeles, the 2011 by Chino Moreno ( Deftones ), Shaun Lopez ( Far was founded) and Chuck Doom.

Band history

The childhood friends Chino Moreno and Shaun Lopez had previously pursued joint projects with their bands. So it made sense for Lopez and Doom, who had already written several songs together, to ask Moreno to sing some of their new songs. Since he was very taken with the music, it was decided to include him as a permanent member of their music project.

Originally the band was supposed to be called Holy Ghost . Due to the possibility of confusion with another band, they decided at the last moment to take on a different name. Lopez suggested ††† what should stand for the three band members. According to Moreno, they use the crosses with their symbolic power consciously, but without being a Christian band because of it, rather there are artistic considerations behind them. Possible connections to the genre of witch house , whose representatives also make electronic music and use symbols, especially the cross, were denied.

The first EP, EP †, or simply EP 1, was initially offered free of charge from August 2, 2011. Chris Robyn, a bandmate of Lopez 'from Far , played the drums, and Duff McKagan ( Guns N' Roses ) was a prominent bass player (appears on This Is a Trick ).

With The Years , Crosses contributed a new song for the soundtrack for the video game Batman: Arkham City .

The second EP, EP †† or EP 2, was released on January 24, 2012. Both previous EPs were self- published.

A third EP was not made for the time being because Moreno had to fulfill other obligations, for example Koi No Yokan from the Deftones was released in November 2012 and the self-titled debut album by Palms , a band that Moreno founded with some former members of Isis, also in 2011 June 2013. In September of the same year Crosses signed a record deal with Sumerian Records , which changed plans and the third EP was finally canceled. Instead, the new songs should appear on a regular studio album along with the revised material from the first two EPs . The new songs The Epilogue and Bitches Brew were released in advance , before the album with the name ††† ( Crosses ) was released on February 11, 2014. For the sake of completeness, the new songs for Record Store Day 2014 were released separately on a third EP.

style

Crosses can be assigned to electro-rock , even if many emphasize the obvious features of Witch House, not only does the name of the band and the first album consist exclusively of crosses, but every song in the name also contains at least one cross, which is usually a t replaced. From a musical point of view, however, the classification in the witch house movement is incorrect. Instead, Alex Young from Consequence of Sound sees a mixture of Moreno's two previous bands, the alternative metal band Deftones and the dream pop collective Team Sleep . The recipe is 80s synths and beats and the unmistakable voice of Moreno.
