Chino Moreno (born June 20, 1973 in Sacramento , California ), actually Camillo Wong Moreno , is an American musician . He became famous as the front man , singer and second guitarist of the Deftones , and he is also active as a singer and guitarist in his side project Team Sleep . Since 2011 he has also been the singer of ††† (Crosses) and Palms .

Life

Moreno was born in 1973 as the second of five children in a financially disadvantaged area of the California capital Sacramento. His father is Mexican and his mother is of Mexican-Irish-Chinese descent. She also owes Moreno his nickname Chino , which means Chinese in Spanish .

At the age of eleven, Moreno started skateboarding , which has accompanied him to this day and found its way into two music videos ("Back To School", "Romantic Dreams") by the Deftones. Before he could graduate from high school, he was expelled from "CK McClatchy High School". In August 2000, Moreno was given the keys to his hometown on an honorary basis.

Moreno was married until 2003; the marriage resulted in two sons, Kristian and Jakobi. His personal problems led Moreno to drug abuse, among other things, he consumed speed .

Moreno was a good friend of Max Cavalera's stepson Dana Wells and was one of the pallbearers at his funeral.

music

Moreno often expresses himself in his texts in a poetic way and likes to use metaphors , so a clear statement can rarely be inferred from them. Vocally, Moreno experiments in many directions, among other things he uses a variety of effects devices that are also used live.

While working on the Deftones third album " White Pony " (2000), Moreno began to write pieces for a side project at the same time. The titles influenced by electronic effects were officially released under the name Team Sleep in the spring of 2005 after a first advance version of the project's debut album, originally announced for 2003, had been launched on the Internet and Team Sleep had then discarded a large part of the recordings .

His second side project, ††† , also called Crosses , Moreno founded in 2011 with his childhood friend Shaun Lopez, the guitarist of Far and Chuck Doom. He described the music as minimal and relaxing . The first EP, EP † was released on August 2, 2011. EP †† followed on January 24, 2012 . A third EP was canceled due to his work with Deftones and Palms , a band he formed in April 2012 with former Isis members Aaron Harris, Clifford Meyer and Jeff Caxide, and released their self-titled debut on June 21. On February 11, 2014, Crosses released the debut album, †††, alternatively also called Crosses . The album is actually a compilation of the first three EPs, with the third never being released on its own, making five of the fifteen songs new.

To date, Moreno has achieved gold or platinum status in the USA and various chart placements worldwide with every Deftones album .

Moreno cites The Cure , Duran Duran , Depeche Mode , Faith No More , Helmet (band) , Cypress Hill , Kool Keith , Bad Brains and Weezer as personal musical influences . Moreno uses Shure microphones and plays Gibson SG guitars.
