Keevil Daly

Keevil Daly (born December 21, 1923 in Georgetown , British Guiana , † June 28, 2011 in Toronto ) was a Canadian weightlifter .

Career

Keevil Daly grew up in British Guiana and emigrated to the USA at the age of 20 because of better living conditions , where he began weightlifting and bodybuilding in New York .

Within two years he had grown into world class in both sports and won a silver medal in weightlifting at the 1947 World Championships in Philadelphia in one of his first ever starts . In the next few years he devoted himself more to his training as an electronics technician and joined the Canadian Air Force. To do this, he first had to take on Canadian citizenship. He continued his education at Ryerson University in Canada and also achieved the rank of qualified sports teacher.

In 1957 he came to Karlsruhe for a year with the Canadian Air Force and started for the Fellbach sports club . In his first fight in the SV Fellbach team, he lifted 415 kilograms as a middle-heavyweight in the Olympic three-way fight. He injured himself in one of the next team fights, but started with a special permit at the German championships in 1957 and won the middle heavyweight title. In 1958 he was transferred to Denmark and won the championship there too. He then retired from active weightlifting and, after retiring from the Canadian Air Force, worked as a sports instructor in Canada and the USA. Keevil Daly died on June 28, 2011 at the age of 87 of osteomyelofibrosis , which later turned into chronic myeloid leukemia .

  • 1954, 4th place , World Championship in Vienna , Ms, with 405 kg, behind Arkadi Vorobjow , USSR , 460 kg, Dave Sheppard , USA, 440 kg and Clyde Emrich , USA, 427.5 kg;
  • 1955, 6th place , World Championships in Munich , Ms, with 385 kg, winner: Vorobjow, 455 kg, ahead of Emrich, 427.5 kg;
  • 1957, 1st place , German championship, Ms, with 382.5 kg, ahead of Norbert Fehr , Mutterstadt , 375 kg and Georg Sames, Hamburg , 372.5 kg
