Arkady Nikitich Vorobyov

Arkadi Nikititsch Vorobjow ( Russian Аркадий Никитич Воробьёв ; born October 3, 1924 in Mordovo , Tambov Oblast , † December 22, 2012 in Moscow ) was a Soviet weightlifter .

Career

During the Second World War Arkady Vorobyov was drafted into the merchant marine in the Black Sea. After the war he first worked in a restaurant in the port of Odessa and was then used to clear mines. In Odessa, he also started lifting weights. The first successes began towards the end of the 1940s. These successes were the beginning of a great sporting career that culminated in two Olympic victories and lasted until 1962.

In the professional sector, too, Arkadi was always anxious to make progress. He studied at the Sverdlovsk Medical Institute and became a doctor. In the 1960s he was the head coach of Soviet weightlifters. After finishing this activity he became rector of an institute for physical culture and sport in Moscow .
