Norbert Schemansky
Norbert Schemansky (born May 30, 1924 in Detroit , Michigan , † September 7, 2016 in Dearborn , Michigan) was an American weightlifter .
Career
Norbert Schemansky was the son of a large family of Polish immigrants to the USA. He began playing sports at North Eastern High School in Detroit. After initially practicing the athletics and American football that are common at this school , he came into contact with weightlifting through his brother Dennis at the age of 16 when he was taken to training at the Detroit Barbell Club. Soon his extraordinary talent for weight lifting showed. By the time he was drafted into the US Army in the summer of 1943, he had increased his best performance in the Olympic three-way battle to 365 kg with a body weight of around 88 kg. During his military service, which lasted until 1946, he had no opportunity to train.
After just a short training session, he achieved such good results in 1946 that he was second in the US heavyweight championships in 1946 and 1947, each behind John Davis . He then took second place at the World Championships in Philadelphia in 1947 . Since then he has belonged to the absolute top of the world, won one Olympic victory and three other Olympic medals. Norbert Schemansky, who, according to the American "way of life", liked to eat hamburgers and pizzas and also to drink a beer, had to take longer breaks from training and competitions due to injuries towards the end of his career, but always recovered and delivered the more than ten years younger Russian Yuri Vlasov at the World Championships and Olympic Games at the beginning of the 1960s fantastic fights. He lived in Dearborn / USA.
