Sidney Henry (born April 21, 1935 in Dallas , Texas ) is a retired American weightlifter .
Career
The Texan began his career as a weightlifter with the YMCA Sports Club in Dallas in the mid-1950s. In the youth and junior division he did not get beyond mediocre results. He first drew attention to himself in 1958 when he achieved 422.5 kg in the Olympic three-way fight at a regional event in the middle heavyweight division (at that time up to 90 kg body weight) and thus advanced into the extended circle of American top lifters. At the YMCA Championships in 1958 and the USA Championships in 1959, however, he failed to make a valid attempt in pushing and so was not included in the ranking. From 1961, after he switched to the heavyweight division and started for the Preston Lions, he came to some very good results at USA championships, the Pan American Games and at world championships. But Norbert Schemansky and Gary Gubner blocked the jump to the 1964 Olympic Games .
In 2009, Henry was inducted into the Texas Weightlifting Hall of Fame .
