Gary Gubner

Gary Gubner ( Gary Jay Gubner ; born December 1, 1942 in New York City ) is a retired American weightlifter and shot putter .

Career

Gary Gubner grew up in New York. He first started with athletics , but as a shot put and discus thrower, he automatically got into weightlifting, as this played a major role in training. Since he also enjoyed weightlifting over the years, he soon started competing in weightlifting, which eventually became his main sport. At first, he achieved better results internationally in the shot put. In 1962 he even set an indoor world record with 19.80 m. In 1962 and 1963 he was the best indoor shot putter in the world. In weightlifting, he became the USA heavyweight champion in 1966. His greatest success as a weightlifter was the vice world champion title in 1965. His best performance in the Olympic three-way fight was 550 kg, which he achieved in 1966.

Gary Gubner is Jewish . He also set signs in his faith when he z. B. in 1961 when the American athletics team started at competitions in Moscow, visited the synagogue there and prayed there and when he competed at the Maccabiah games in Israel in 1961 and won weightlifting, shot put and discus throwing.

  • 1967: not placed, after three unsuccessful attempts to press;
  • 1968: 2nd place, S, with 347.5 kg, behind Ernest Pickett , 512.5 kg (Gary had 3 failed attempts in jerks, but before that he had hit the USA record with 197.5 kg, the world record was set by Viktor Andrejew , USSR , held at 198.5 kg)

USA Olympic elimination:

  • 1964: 2nd place, S, with 502.5 kg, behind Schemansky, 520 kg

Philadelphia Championship:

  • 1966: 1st place, with 550 kg, ahead of Bednarski, 497.5 kg and Schemansky, 475 kg
