Alexei Alexandrovich Petrov ( Russian Алексе́й Алекса́ндрович Петро́в ; born September 8, 1974 in Volgograd , Soviet Union ) is a former Russian weightlifter .

Athletic career

Petrov made his international debut at the Junior World Championships in 1992 in Varna , where he won gold with a weight of 357.5 kg in the light heavyweight division up to 82.5 kg. After he had won the Junior World Championships in 1993, now in the middle- heavy weight category up to 91 kg, he competed in the seniors for the first time in 1994 at the EM in Sokolow. With a new duel world record of 412.5 kg, Petrow won gold in a sovereign manner in front of the Georgian Akakios Kachiasvilis with 400.0 kg and the Bulgarian Ivan Chakarow with 395.0 kg.

With the same duel result, he also won the 1994 World Cup in Istanbul . He also set two world records there. In snatching he managed 186.0 kg and in pushing 228.0 kg, which, however, due to the 2.5 kg rule that applied at the time, only counted 412.5 kg.

At the World Championships in Guangzhou in October 1995 , Petrow scored 410.0 kg and thus won gold, but was disqualified after a positive doping test and suspended for life. The following June, however, the Moscow Supreme Court found Petrov's ex-girlfriend guilty of secretly administering anabolic steroids out of jealousy , leading to Petrov's pardon from the IMF and allowing him to compete in the Atlanta Olympics.

At the Olympic Games in Atlanta in 1996, Petrow was the clear favorite for the title, especially after Kachiasvilis switched to heavyweight up to 99 kg. With a duel result of 402.5 kg and with a world record in snatching of 187.5 kg, Petrow won Olympic gold in front of the Greeks Leonidas Kokas and Oliver Caruso , who both achieved 390 kg.

After a three-year break from competition, Petrow tried again at the World Championships in Athens in 1999 in the class up to 94 kg to win the title, but could only take fifth place with 395.0 kg. At the EM 2000 in Sofia he reached fifth place again with 390.0 kg, so his performance at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney was all the more astonishing , where he was third behind Kachiasvilis and Szymon Kolecki with 402.5 kg in a duel .

In 2002 Petrov was able to win the European Championships again. He achieved 400.0 kg and was therefore ahead of Milen Dobrew with 397.5 kg.

Petrow played his last international tournament in 2003 at the World Cup in Vancouver . Here he won silver in the snatch with 185.0 kg, but failed twice in the jerk because of his entry weight of 220.0 kg, then increased to 222.5 kg and failed again.
